The QA Coach plays a central role in shaping and embedding a culture of quality across the engineering organisation. This is not a hands-off advisory role — it requires active, day-to-day engagement with product and engineering teams to coach, challenge, and drive the adoption of quality practices at every stage of the software delivery lifecycle, from initial design through to production release.
The role is responsible for championing a shift-left mindset across all teams, ensuring that quality is treated as a shared responsibility rather than a late-stage gate. The QA Coach will define and drive the standardisation of QA processes, methodologies, and tooling, whilst working closely with third-party providers and internal stakeholders to maintain consistent standards of quality delivery. A key part of the role is building and leading a team of QA Engineers, providing the mentorship and direction needed to develop their skills and contribute to broader organisational quality goals.
The QA Coach will also be a visible advocate for quality engineering within the wider business, supporting community events and knowledge-sharing initiatives, and serving as a key point of contact for customers and the customer training team to ensure the software release process meets their needs.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Quality Culture & Coaching
- Champion team ownership of quality, embedding the principle that quality is the responsibility of everyone — not solely the QA function.
- Coach all team members on shift-left practices, equipping engineers, designers, and product managers with the knowledge and techniques to identify and address quality concerns as early as possible in the development lifecycle.
- Work closely with all functions — including product, design, engineering, and operations — to coach the integration of quality into every stage, from requirements and design through to release and production.
- Process Standardisation & Governance
- Drive the standardisation of QA processes, standards, and methodologies across teams, ensuring consistency and reducing duplication of effort whilst allowing for appropriate team-level adaptation.
- Define, track, and communicate key quality metrics to engineering leadership and wider stakeholders, providing clear visibility into quality health, trends, and areas requiring attention.
- Oversee third-party quality delivery, ensuring external providers adhere to agreed standards and that their outputs integrate seamlessly with internal quality expectations.
- Automation & Tooling
- Drive the automation programme across QA activities, identifying opportunities to increase test coverage, reduce manual effort, and accelerate feedback cycles within the CI/CD pipeline.
- Drive tooling consistency with the wider business, ensuring adoption of platforms and tools that are aligned with organisational standards and strategy.
- Community & Customer Support
- Support the engineering community in events and initiatives designed to promote the delivery of quality in software engineering, acting as a champion and facilitator for knowledge-sharing and best practice.
- Support customers and the customer training team in meeting their needs within the software release process, acting as a bridge between engineering delivery and the end-user experience.
- Hire, mentor, and manage a team of QA Engineers, fostering a high-performing, collaborative team culture and supporting individual development and career progression.
What experience do I need
- Strong understanding of QA methodologies and frameworks, including but not limited to ISTQB, exploratory testing, and risk-based testing approaches.
- Proven experience in designing and implementing test automation strategies, with hands-on familiarity of automation tooling (e.g. Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, or equivalent).
- Experience working within CI/CD pipelines and a DevOps or platform engineering environment.
- Familiarity with shift-left practices and the ability to translate these into practical coaching and team-level adoption.
- Experience in defining and implementing quality metrics and KPIs at a team or organisational level.
- Understanding of software architecture and system design, sufficient to engage meaningfully in technical quality conversations.
- Experience managing or overseeing third-party quality delivery or outsourced testing services.
