The Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and regulatory compliance of a chemical plant operating under UK legislation, including the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations 2015 and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. The role focuses on protecting personnel, hazardous materials, and critical infrastructure, while supporting emergency response and maintaining strict adherence to site safety procedures.
Responsibilities
- Control access to site in accordance with Security Industry Authority (SIA) licensing requirements and company procedures
- Verify identity, permits, and authorisation of all staff, contractors, and visitors.
- Patrol the site, including high-risk and restricted areas such as chemical storage zones and process units
- Monitor CCTV, alarms, and access control systems for security breaches or safety risks.
- Enforce site rules aligned with COMAH Regulations 2015, ensuring safe handling and storage of hazardous substances
- Support compliance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 by reporting unsafe practices or exposures.
- Respond to incidents including fire alarms, chemical spills, unauthorised access, or suspicious behaviour.
- Assist with emergency procedures, including evacuations and liaison with emergency services.
- Maintain accurate incident logs and reports in line with legal and audit requirements.
- Conduct vehicle, personnel, and goods inspections to prevent unauthorised removal or introduction of hazardous materials.
- Act as a visible deterrent to security threats and ensure site integrity.
Regulatory & Legal Responsibilities

COMAH regulations apply to sites handling dangerous substances and aim to prevent major accidents and limit their consequences to people and the environment.
Required Qualifications
- Valid SIA Security Guard License (essential)
- GCSEs or equivalent (including English and Maths)
- Previous experience in security, ideally within industrial, chemical, or high-risk environments
- Basic understanding of UK health & safety legislation
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on a COMAH-regulated site
- First Aid at Work certification
- Fire safety / emergency response training
- Knowledge of hazardous materials handling and site safety systems
Working Conditions
- Shift work including nights, weekends, and public holidays
- Work in hazardous industrial environments with exposure to chemicals, noise, and outdoor conditions
- Mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

To succeed in this role, you will need the following:
- Applicants must be aged 18+ with a valid SIA License.
- Essential – DS SIA Licence
- Essential – First Aid Certificate
- Desirable – CCTV SIA License
- Desirable – Previous experience working in a security role, preferably in a commercial or logistics environment.
- Must have a 5-year checkable work or back to school history.
- Proof of right to work and live in the UK.
