Job Description - Shopping Centre Security Officer
Contract Type: Zero-hours contract
Working Hours: Flexible shifts covering weekdays, weekends and occasional nights
Reporting To: Security Supervisor / Shopping Centre Management
Role Purpose
To provide a professional, visible and reassuring security presence throughout the shopping centre, protecting customers, retailers, employees and property while delivering excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct internal and external patrols of the shopping centre, car parks, service corridors and surrounding areas.
- Monitor entrances, exits and restricted areas.
- Respond promptly to incidents, emergencies and requests for assistance.
- Assist retailers with shoplifting, antisocial behaviour and other security incidents.
- Maintain regular radio communication with the control room and supervisors.
- Support fire evacuations and other emergency procedures.
- Identify and report security, maintenance, fire-safety and health and safety concerns.
- Provide directions and assistance to customers and visitors.
- Complete accurate incident reports, patrol records and daily logs.
- Manage lost property in accordance with site procedures.
- Assist the police and emergency services when required.
- Follow all assignment instructions, company policies and shopping-centre procedures.
Working Arrangements
This is a zero-hours position, with no guaranteed minimum number of hours. Shifts will be offered according to operational requirements and may include:
- Weekday shifts
- Regular weekend work
- Bank holidays
- Occasional night shifts
- Short-notice sickness and holiday cover
Applicants must be flexible and able to work a mixture of shift patterns when required.
Essential Requirements
- Valid SIA Door Supervisor.
- Previous security or customer-service experience.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.
- Strong observation and incident-management skills.
- Ability to complete clear and accurate reports.
- Reliable, punctual and able to work independently or as part of a team.
- Physically capable of completing regular foot patrols.
Desirable Requirements
- Previous shopping-centre or retail-security experience.
- Valid SIA CCTV licence.
- First Aid at Work qualification.
- Fire marshal training.
- Experience dealing with shoplifting and antisocial behaviour.
Uniform and Professional Standards
The officer must:
- Wear the complete approved uniform and any required PPE.
- Maintain a clean, smart and professional appearance.
- Display their SIA licence while on duty.
- Remain vigilant, approachable and proactive.
- Treat customers, retailers, colleagues and visitors with respect.
- Avoid personal mobile-phone use while on duty, except during authorised breaks or emergencies.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with data-protection requirements.
