We are looking for an experienced Welding Technician to provide technical support and expertise across our Welding and Fabrication operations. You will work closely with the Welding and Fabrication Manager, Welding Supervisor, Welding Inspector, and Engineering teams to ensure welding processes, procedures, and qualifications are effective, efficient, and repeatable. This role requires moderate supervision and a proactive approach to problem-solving, process improvement, and production support.
Success in this role will be measured by your ability to manage welding tasks accurately, support continuous improvement, demonstrate attention to detail, communicate effectively across teams, and contribute to the implementation and maintenance of ISO 3834 standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as deputy to the Responsible Welding Coordinator (dRWC) and provide fabrication input to ensure efficient, low-complexity production.
- Develop, maintain, and qualify welding procedures, fabrication plans, and welder qualifications.
- Support production by investigating weld failures, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions.
- Advise on welding techniques during project bid stages and serve as point of contact for welding-related issues.
- Collaborate with engineers, QA/QC, and production teams to ensure smooth, coordinated operations.
- Maintain welding/fabrication data in ERP systems, generate process plans, weld maps, and conduct production look-aheads.
Improvements:
- Continuously review welding methods, processes, and documentation to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and standardize best practices.
- Promote a "right first time – on time" culture across the welding team.
- Support the development of welding personnel through mentoring, training, and audits.
- Identify opportunities for process and fabrication improvements, implementing changes to enhance productivity and quality.
Requirements
Essential:
- Time-served Welder with a minimum of 5 years' experience.
- Completion of an Apprenticeship.
- NC/HNC/HND in Fabrication/Welding.
- PCN Level 2 / CSWIP 3.1 or equivalent Welding Inspection qualification.
- Experience with TIG, MIG/MAG welding processes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, methodical and organised approach, and ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
Desirable:
- Experience with mechanised/automatic welding techniques.
- Familiarity with ERP systems and computer-aided process planning.
- Knowledge of NAVSEA, DEF STAN, ISO, and ASME standards.
- International/European Welding Specialist or Technologist qualifications (or working towards).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, respond to changing demands, and proactively solve problems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
