Working Pattern: 4-day week (Mon–Thurs) or 5-day week (Mon–Thurs + half day Friday)

Join Our Commissioning Team:

We are seeking a skilled and adaptable Commissioning Technician (Mechanical & Hydraulic) to join MacTaggart Scott, reporting directly to the Commissioning Manager within our Commissioning Department. As a key member of the Engineering team, you will carry out installation, supervision, commissioning and in‑service support activities on MacTaggart Scott manufactured equipment worldwide. This is a hands‑on role requiring strong mechanical and hydraulic knowledge, professionalism, and the ability to perform effectively in high‑pressure environments, often at short notice.

Our Commissioning team plays a vital role in ensuring equipment is installed, tested and accepted to the highest standards, both in‑house and at customer sites worldwide.

What Is the Job About?

The primary objective of this role is to carry out equipment installation, commissioning, acceptance and in‑service support activities in line with customer requirements, ensuring compliant products and high‑quality service delivery. Success will be measured through:

  • Timely customer acceptance of equipment and services.
  • High‑quality commissioning documentation.
  • Effective fault diagnosis and repair.
  • Delivery of operator and maintainer training.
  • Strong technical liaison with customers.

You will work with minimal day‑to‑day supervision, receiving guidance from the Commissioning Manager and Commissioning Engineers where required.

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supervising and assisting during new installations and refit projects.
  • Coordinating and supervising subcontract personnel and teams.
  • Carrying out commissioning and acceptance activities for new and refurbished equipment in line with schedule and budget.
  • Assisting with preparation of Harbour Acceptance Test (HAT) and Sea Acceptance Test (SAT) procedures.
  • Liaising with customers to manage equipment acceptance.
  • Delivering effective training packages for safe operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Conducting fault diagnosis, repair, and equipment surveys.
  • Producing high‑quality technical and survey reports.
  • Assisting with preparation of risk assessments and method statements.
  • Supporting in‑house testing and commissioning activities alongside Test Engineers.
  • Promoting and adhering to company Health & Safety policies at all times.

You will also contribute to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within the Commissioning team.

About You

You will be a proactive and technically capable individual who:

  • Communicates effectively with both internal teams and customers.
  • Is confident engaging directly with clients.
  • Has strong hydraulic and mechanical systems knowledge.
  • Thrives in challenging environments and can work independently away from home.
  • Produces clear and professional technical reports.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and a practical, problem‑solving mindset.

Essential

  • Completed mechanical or hydraulic apprenticeship with relevant qualification (HNC, City & Guilds, Scotvec or equivalent).
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic circuits, components, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience in commissioning, installation or maintenance of mechanical/hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to work away from home for significant periods.
  • Strong report writing skills and competency with MS Office.

Desirable

  • Experience with electro‑mechanical and hydraulic handling systems.
  • Working knowledge of electrical circuits, PLCs and control systems.
  • Understanding of variable speed electric drives and controls.
  • Awareness of military environmental requirements (safety, EMC, shock, noise, vibration, hazardous areas).
  • BSc or BEng in a relevant engineering discipline.

  • Frequent worldwide travel, including extended periods away from home.
  • Ability to work within military and naval establishments where security and confidentiality are essential.
  • Flexible and professional approach to working hours and locations.
