The role will work closely with the other members of the night shift leadership team on shift and hold shared and specific responsibilities within the Bulk (pallet and pack storage) and order finishing/dispatch functions, reporting to the Senior Team Leader. There will be three direct reports and indirect responsibility for 20+ team members on any given day so the ability to lead and motivate a team is key to success in this role.

About Us: Macmillan has a rich history in the book industry spanning almost 200 years, beginning in 1843 when our founder Daniel Macmillan wrote: “I thought it worthwhile to plant a seed”. Today, our ambition is to nurture the best talent from the most diverse group of people, so we can continue to distribute books that make our world a better and happier place. At Macmillan Distribution (MDL), our mission is to deliver excellent service to our publishers and customers by creating an environment where everyone can fulfil their potential and be their best. Operating out of our 500,000 sq ft warehouse near Swansea, we ship over 1 million books every week. We are deeply committed to our environmental impact; MDL has been completely carbon neutral since 2017. Our Swansea site runs on 100% renewable electricity, recycles 97% of its waste, and recently installed 856 solar panels to help power our operation.

The Opportunity & Working Hours: We are looking for an established people leader to join our mutually supportive, hard-working night shift leadership team. You will work 37.5 hours per week, leading teams through the night on 8-hour shifts between 8pm and 6am, Sunday through to Thursday.

The Role: Reporting to the Senior Team Leader, you will have daily operational accountability for your team’s workload within the Bulk storage and order finishing/dispatch departments. We have recently invested over £10 million in our physical infrastructure and are installing an automated storage and retrieval solution.

  • Key Responsibilities:
  • People Leadership: Directly manage three reports and indirectly lead 20+ team members daily, scaling up to manage a shift of over 70 people during peak periods. Identify training requirements and actively support continuous development.
  • Operational Excellence: Ensure all orders are dispatched accurately and consistently, and that customer stock is optimally located for efficient picking.
  • Continuous Improvement: Engage your team in identifying process improvements, empowering them to influence positive change for a sustainable and cost-effective operation.
  • Health & Safety: Ensure that all individual, team, and site health and safety policies are adhered to and given the highest priority.

About You: To succeed in our fast-paced, people-focused environment, you must be a great listener who can process information quickly and make effective decisions to meet customer demands.

Experience: You must have a minimum of two years’ experience leading a team of at least five people, ideally within logistics or a supply chain environment. You will have experience of working on Night Shift.

Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for briefing teams, documenting meetings, and dealing with stakeholders. You must be PC literate with good working knowledge of Warehouse Management Systems and Microsoft Office.

Education: A minimum of Levels A-C or 7-9 GCSE/CSE in Maths and English.

Desirable: An IOSH Health and Safety Certification and a Level 3 ILM/CMI Leadership and Management qualification.

What We Offer: We feel our teams and their experience give us the ‘something extra’ in the book distribution market, and we are proud of the culture we continue to invest in. Alongside a highly competitive salary, we offer a fantastic benefits package:

  • Enhanced pension contributions (up to 11% employer and 7% employee).
  • Annual leave starting at 25 days plus bank holidays, increasing up to 30 days with service.
  • Private medical insurance, medical cash plan, and dental insurance.
  • Life assurance and company sick pay.
