The Business Application Manager is responsible for the operational governance, optimisation, and effective use of the organisation’s line of business application portfolio. The role ensures that business applications deliver measurable value, remain compliant with organisational policies and security requirements, and are aligned with business processes and data management principles. This role provides critical insight, analysis, and evidence to support decision making, consolidation opportunities, and continuous improvement of the application roadmap at Mackley.
Responsibilities
- Lead the governance and operational management of the organisation’s business application portfolio.
- Define, implement, and maintain role based access and permission frameworks across business applications.
- Ensure alignment of applications with organisational policies, security standards, and Cyber Essentials controls.
- Support and coordinate Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) for new or significantly changed business applications, ensuring privacy and data protection risks are identified and appropriately managed.
- Monitor and report on system usage, adoption, performance, and effectiveness.
- Identify opportunities for application optimisation, rationalisation, or consolidation and provide evidence based recommendations.
- Promote and support effective data governance, data quality, and information management practices within business systems.
- Contribute to the development and operation of application related service management processes, including incident, request, and problem management.
- Develop, maintain, and promote knowledge management resources, user guidance, and training materials.
- Establish, facilitate, and lead a Superuser Forum to support engagement, adoption, feedback, and continuous improvement.
- Support business change initiatives impacting business applications, ensuring appropriate user adoption and operational readiness.
- Act as the operational liaison with application vendors and suppliers, supporting issue resolution, performance monitoring, and licence management.
- Support the mapping, review, and optimisation of business processes enabled by applications.
- Supervise and support business application administrators.
- Build effective working relationships with business stakeholders, influencing best practice system usage and governance adherence.
Required qualifications, skills and experience
Knowledge & Experience
- Demonstrable experience governing, managing, or supporting business applications within a corporate environment. Part of larger parent company desirable.
- Experience designing or managing system access controls and permission models.
- Understanding of application governance, lifecycle management, and optimisation principles.
- Awareness of security, risk, and compliance frameworks such as Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001, or similar.
- Experience supporting or contributing to service management practices aligned with ITIL principles.
- Experience supporting user adoption, training, or change initiatives.
- Experience working with SaaS platforms and vendor managed systems.
- Experience in backup, recovery, recovery point objectives and recovery time objectives.
Systems knowledge
- Experience with enterprise platforms such as Procore, Business Central, Microsoft 365, HR systems, or similar.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong analytical and problem solving capability.
- Ability to interpret business needs and translate into system governance or improvement actions.
