Mackinnon Bruce International is representing a leading provider of power generation solutions in the recruitment of a Senior / Lead Controls System Engineer.

Location: Leeds, UK

Summary

The company provides expert after-sales support for the operation and maintenance of gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, control systems, and auxiliary systems. The Engineering department works closely with customers and internal teams to deliver technical solutions, operational support, and business development opportunities. The Controls System Engineer will work collaboratively with the Engineering department and other teams to provide solutions for both OEM and non-OEM control systems, as well as cybersecurity solutions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design support, troubleshooting, fault identification, acceptance testing (FAT/SAT), on-site or remote implementation, commissioning, and sales support, focusing on asset availability, reliability, safety, and cybersecurity.
  • Developing technical documentation, logic design and programming, on-site testing, and other tasks related to control systems and cybersecurity, in line with the company’s quality management system.
  • Learning about gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, and relevant digital solutions in addition to core responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical solutions, problem-solving, fault identification, on-site or remote solution implementation, and commissioning for control systems, with a focus on reliability, safety, and cybersecurity.
  • Work with Engineering and cross-functional teams to deliver solutions for OEM and non-OEM control systems.
  • Maintain and develop strong customer relationships and ensure all tasks are completed on time, in line with the quality management system.
  • Develop technical documentation, logic design, programming, and on-site testing.
  • Support the promotion and installation of integrated digital platforms, cybersecurity packages, software upgrades, and control system upgrades (e.g., Netmation, HIACS, Mark VIe).
  • Assist the Control System team manager to coordinate team activities effectively and efficiently.

Detailed Duties

  • Support the operation and maintenance of control systems for gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, and auxiliary systems during scheduled outages and normal operations.
  • Assist in design, implementation, and troubleshooting of customer control system issues.
  • Provide hardware, software, and cybersecurity solutions for system updates and upgrades.
  • Create technical reports, procedures, and other documentation under Engineering Manager guidance.
  • Verify, maintain, and troubleshoot control systems and associated instrumentation.
  • Refer to manuals, diagrams, and procedures for on-site commissioning activities.
  • Support sales activities by providing technical documentation and guidance for RfQs, purchase orders, and related activities.
  • Travel to customer sites as required.

Person Specification

  • Graduate-level education or equivalent experience in Electrical, I&C, or Systems Engineering.
  • Fluency in business English; Japanese language skills are an advantage but not essential.
  • Proven experience in Oil & Gas, Energy, or Process sectors with expertise in logic design, control system architecture, hardware/software installation, simulation, and operational aspects.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications.

Technical Skills Required

  • Experience with DCS, SCADA, PLC, machine controllers, and instrumentation for rotating equipment or process plants.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in design, programming, installation, and verification of industrial control systems.
  • Programming experience in Ladder Logic, Pseudo Code, Function Block Diagram, or Sequential Flow Chart.
  • Experience with ICS platforms such as GE Mark V/VI/VIe, Siemens S7/300, or Allen-Bradley RSLinx 5000.
  • Familiarity with HMI systems like InTouch, iFix, or CIMPLICITY.
  • Strong knowledge of cybersecurity regulations and solutions.
  • Understanding of gas turbine, steam turbine, and generator operations.
  • Proficiency with industrial communication protocols (Modbus, ControlNet, Ethernet/IP, OPC, etc.).
  • Basic understanding of IT/OT systems and TCP/IP networking.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards, regulations, and safe working practices.
  • Previous experience with Mitsubishi (Netmation/MELCO) or Hitachi (HIACS) control systems preferred.
