Payroll Team Leader
Location: Oakham (Hybrid Working) Salary: £38,000 - £40,000 + Benefits Contract Type: Permanent, Full-Time
Macildowie are recruiting for an experienced Payroll Team Leader on behalf of a well-established professional services business based in Oakham.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced payroll professional to take ownership of a busy payroll function, lead a small team and play a key role in driving service improvements.
The successful candidate will combine strong technical payroll knowledge with excellent communication skills and a proactive approach to leadership and process improvement.
The Opportunity
As Payroll Team Leader, you will oversee the delivery of payroll services across a varied client portfolio whilst managing and developing a small payroll team.
This is a hands‑on position that offers the opportunity to influence processes, strengthen client relationships and contribute to the ongoing success of the payroll function.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Operations
- Manage end‑to‑end payroll processing across multiple payrolls.
- Ensure payrolls are processed accurately and within agreed deadlines.
- Oversee statutory payments, deductions and year‑end payroll activities.
- Ensure compliance with payroll legislation and HMRC requirements.
- Support payroll reconciliations and reporting requirements.
- Coordinate P11D and PAYE Settlement Agreement (PSA) activities where required.
Team Leadership
- Lead, coach and support payroll team members.
- Allocate workloads and monitor service delivery standards.
- Provide technical guidance and support for complex payroll queries.
- Act as the escalation point for payroll-related issues.
Client & Stakeholder Management
- Build strong relationships with clients and internal stakeholders.
- Provide expert payroll support and guidance.
- Resolve queries effectively and professionally.
- Deliver a consistently high standard of service.
Continuous Improvement
- Review and improve payroll processes and procedures.
- Identify efficiencies and opportunities for automation.
- Support system enhancements and best‑practice initiatives.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of payroll services.
About You
Essential Experience
- Proven payroll experience within a payroll bureau, accountancy practice, outsourced payroll environment or similar.
- Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, PAYE, NIC, RTI and pensions.
- Experience managing multiple payrolls and deadlines.
- Previous team leadership or supervisory experience.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organisational abilities.
Desirable Experience
- Experience supporting P11D and PSA processes.
- Experience working in a client‑facing payroll environment.
- Payroll qualification (or working towards one).
- Experience using payroll software systems.
