Role Overview

A Planning Specialist (Planning Lead) is responsible for leading a team to develop a detailed Level 4/5 schedule aligned to the level 3 schedule across a programme or multiple projects. The role involves identifying material requirements, allocating budgets, managing documentation and detailed scheduling to support Delivery Managers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the creation and maintenance of the bill of materials to the Level 4/5 schedule and provide a budget aligned to the project budget.
  • Run a 6-week planning process ensuring viability with the Level 3 schedule and 12-week look-ahead across a programme/multiple projects.
  • Monitor and control all work in progress using standard reports; release and close change codes.
  • Plan emergent/additional work to keep it on schedule.
  • Performance-manage and develop the planning team.
  • Liaise with engineering, purchasing, warehousing, production and other stakeholders to reduce contract risk.
  • Attend daily project focus meetings.
  • Maintain IFS for relevant work and monitor KPIs.
  • Report on labour forecasts and supply delivery forecasts.
  • Assist with budgetary control and shop order production.
  • Support building methods development and business-winning activities.

  • Direct assets and resources to meet objectives.
  • Promote financial awareness across teams.

Commercial

  • Enable staff to assess risks, costs and contractual relationships.
  • Encourage dialogue to improve commercial viability.
  • Collaborate across the business to realise synergies.
  • Involve commercial function in contracting processes.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Recent experience in a similar environment and proficiency with ERP tools (IFS, SAP, etc.).
  • Experience in estimating.
  • Competent scheduling experience with relevant tools and in MS Office.
  • Experience across multiple project types and lifecycle phases.
  • Full construction lifecycle experience from manufacturing to commissioning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ONC in a relevant construction trade or an engineering qualification, or a professional qualification (APM, ACostE, RICS, etc.).
  • APM Project Professional Qualification (PPQ) or equivalent within 12 months.
  • APM Practitioner in Project Planning and Controls, Earned Value Management.
  • APM Chartered Professional (ChPP).
  • APM Project Risk Management Level 2.

Logistics & Compliance

  • Based in Plymouth, Devon – 2-3 days on site per week.
  • Must pass BPSS and SC clearance.
  • Will manage a team of three, growing with time.
  • Strong client-facing leadership required.
