The GIS Lead is responsible for managing the design, implementation, and maintenance of the GIS infrastructure. This includes developing management plans to govern GIS data collection, database management, spatial analysis, and mapping projects. The GIS Lead ensures the effective integration of GIS technology into the organisation's processes and decision‑making, developing and implementing GIS strategies that align with the organisation's goals.
Responsibilities
- Define the strategic direction of GIS services within Mace Consult, ensuring alignment with the consultancy's digital, BIM, information management and wider business strategies.
- Manage innovation in GIS applications for construction and infrastructure projects, identifying new use cases that improve delivery, assurance, asset insight and operational outcomes.
- Develop a team and guide current team members on the application of GIS methods, techniques and technologies in the design, construction, handover and operations stages of projects.
- Develop and implement location‑based digital solutions within client organisations.
- Establish the framework to manage business and information requirements to identify efficiencies and opportunities through digital delivery.
- Identify opportunities where GIS products improve decision‑making, deliver efficiencies and provide insights.
- Develop GIS strategies and solutions for client‑facing projects and programmes.
- Keep up to date with innovations and developments in GIS technology, software, and methodologies.
- Participate in industry events to stay up to date on the latest GIS and BIM developments.
- Contribute to company‑wide digital transformation initiatives by embedding geospatial intelligence into digital delivery processes, platforms and decision‑making.
- Drive business growth through new GIS service offerings, market expansion, client propositions and integration with wider Mace Consult digital services.
- Manage the capture and analysis of business requirements to develop and implement GIS strategies that align with client organisation goals.
- Drive engagement with various departments (e.g., planning, urban design, environmental teams) to understand their GIS requirements and establish solution frameworks.
- Provide GIS expertise and advice on consult projects.
- Collaborate with client and supply chain teams to define information requirements and deliverables.
- Manage the review and assurance of supply chain information management execution plans and master information delivery plans relevant to GIS.
- Engage with consultants and contractors to communicate GIS requirements and compliance.
- Contribute to bid responses to ensure these are compliant with the client's requirements and align with MACE Consult's capabilities.
- Act as a key point of contact on projects for GIS‑related issues or enquiries.
- Represent Mace at industry events, client engagements and professional forums, promoting GIS capability and thought leadership across construction and infrastructure markets.
- Develop strategic partnerships with technology providers, research institutions and industry bodies to advance GIS innovation and service capability.
- Manage GIS‑related projects, including spatial analysis, map production, and web GIS development.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, such as IT, planning, engineering and environmental departments.
- Monitor project timelines, budgets and resources.
- Oversee large‑scale, high‑profile GIS projects, ensuring delivery aligns with client requirements, programme objectives, budgets and quality expectations.
- Manage GIS department budgets, resource planning and capability deployment to support project delivery and business priorities.
- Develop and implement GIS strategies, standards and requirements.
- Ensure compliance with relevant regional standards, such as the National Geospatial Data Policies and Standards for the Hubs.
- Implement GIS ISO, Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards, industry standards and best practices such as ISO 19115, 19157 and 19158 on projects.
- Promote and maintain an understanding of ISO 19650 and applicable standards for information management.
- Develop GIS roles and responsibilities for the Mace career framework, ensuring clear alignment between capability, grade expectations, professional development and service needs.
- Develop GIS processes, activity guides, tools and templates for the Mace Way control centre to support consistent service delivery, assurance and continuous improvement.
- Integrate GIS data with other information such as information models, asset management, health and safety, schedule and cost.
- Collect, process and manage geospatial data from various sources, including field surveys, topographic surveys and remote sensing.
- Deliver geospatial data quality control procedures and effective management of metadata to ensure data integrity.
- Undertake data conversions and coordinate transformations of geospatial data.
- Provide GIS‑specific reviews and assurances to consultants' digital information execution plans and master information delivery plans.
- Review and assure project topographical survey information, ensuring they meet positional accuracy requirements.
- Oversee data acquisition strategies to ensure Mace has access to high‑quality, accurate and authoritative spatial data for projects, bids and strategic decision‑making.
- Manage the GIS working group within the Mace Consult community, setting priorities, sharing best practice and driving consistent adoption of GIS standards, methods and tools.
Qualifications
- Using ESRI ArcGIS software solutions (Online and Enterprise Portal) GIS data management and governance.
- Practical experience of data transformations and conversions through automated ETL processes.
- Spatial analysis techniques and methods.
- International and industry GIS data models.
- Scripting and automation (e.g., Python, SQL, Arcade).
- Extract, transform, load (ETL) software technologies (Safe FME Certified Professional).
- BIM and CAD software technologies.
- Scripting and programming skills.
- Database administration skills.
- ISO 19650 knowledge.
- Construction and/or asset management experience.
- Understanding of other platforms (i.e. Sensat).
