About The Project

Curzon Street station is a new £800m HS2 project in Birmingham city centre. The station development, whilst forming part of the new HS2 network between London and the North, will provide a catalyst for development across the East side of Birmingham. As a leading station, Curzon Street strives to provide a centre of excellence for the development of best practice reporting and management models.

About The Role

The Environmental and Sustainability Lead is responsible for establishing and overseeing the projects sustainability and environmental strategy and implementation, establishing and reforming systems and processes that will drive innovation and best practice in line with the requirements of HS2 and Mace Dragados. The role will support the Stakeholder & Engagement Lead, Mace Dragados colleagues and the supply chain to ensure environmental compliance is in accordance with the Environment Management Systems (EMS) and the Environmental Management Requirements (EMR).

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Leading the production, maintenance & compliance of all the Environmental Management Plans including the identification of significant environmental aspects and impacts.
  • Ensure compliance with HS2 Environmental Minimum Requirements including: General Principles; Annex 1 - Code of Construction Practice; Annex 2 - Planning Memorandum; Annex 3 - Heritage Memorandum; and Annex 4 - Environmental Memorandum.
  • Lead incidents and complaints investigations, ensuring the comprehensive gathering of supporting evidence material and reporting to SLT and HS2.
  • Oversee monitoring data on site and record environmental performance / compliance undertaking regular site inspections and audits of construction sites and supply chain operations.
  • Periodic reviews of method statements and other technical documents to ensure completeness and conformance to contractual and legal requirements.
  • Build the project level understanding of any relevant environmental requirements and develop mitigations that will inhibit any impacts on the construction programme.
  • Work with Planning Managers to incorporate the key environment milestones into the programme.
  • Contribute to and roll out ‘Good practice guide to…’ environmental requirements and regularly socialise with MDJV colleagues.
  • Manage general environmental enquiries and work with HS2, Stakeholder & Engagement Lead, U&A / Consents Team etc. on any environmental requirements affecting the Project.
  • Provide regular and ad-hoc reports on Environmental issues.
  • Periodically review the environmental processes in the project Quality Management System with MDJV Euston Team.
  • Ensure that the Stakeholder Record Management system is regularly updated and provides a clear summary of current discussions with external stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain the Environmental key risks and issues log to be used to report to Senior Leadership.
  • Leading on meeting the project's carbon target by working with the project design and delivery teams.
  • Maintaining a PAS 2080 approach to carbon management on the project.
  • Leading the project's BREEAM certification requirements.

What You’ll Bring

  • Understanding and experience of delivering a PAS 2080 approach to carbon management, and meeting carbon targets.
  • Experience of delivering BREEAM certification.

  • Good written and communications skills.
  • Strong administration and IT Skills.
  • Good knowledge and practical experience of Environmental Management Systems compliant with ISO14001:2015.
  • Excellent knowledge and practical experience of environmental legal requirements.
  • Skilled in questioning and investigating environmental situations and root causes.
  • Educated to degree or equivalent, typically environmental discipline (or related).
  • Professional membership of an appropriate environmental body (eg MIEMA).
  • Appropriate CSCS card type and level.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of archaeology, air quality, noise and vibration, surface and groundwater, contaminated land, waste, ecology and built heritage legislation / monitoring.
  • Knowledge of SEDEX and responsible procurement standards.
  • Technical knowledge of the construction process.
  • Construction site experience for infrastructure projects.
  • Experience of working on major construction projects.
  • Other specialist environmental qualifications.
