About The Project

Curzon Street station is a new £800m HS2 project in Birmingham city centre. The station development, whilst forming part of the new HS2 network between London and the North, will provide a catalyst for development across the East side of Birmingham. As a leading station, Curzon Street strives to provide a centre of excellence for the development of best practice reporting and management models.

About The Role

Manage all aspects of the design, including coordination, submission, compliance, programming and assurance for the design packages. The Design Manager liaises with the Consultant Design Manager and manages, coordinates, integrates and certifies that the works for the project have been constructed in accordance with the design for the packages assigned.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Develop the design at package level to achieve a safe, buildable, operational and maintainable asset.
  • Engage the Construction Team and call on Early Contractor Involvement as applicable.
  • Actively create an environment of collaboration and engagement with the Design Managers, Project Managers and Project Engineers allocated to each package.
  • Develop an approach to design driven by value and collaborative working with the Design team, Construction team and the supply chain.
  • Liaise and coordinate with other Design Managers, Responsible Engineers and Assurance Team members for design package related items.
  • Coordinate the design package reviews.
  • Review Assurance deliverables at package level and deliver to Senior Design Manager / Lead Design Manager / Head of Design / Technical Assurance Manager for sign off.
  • Ensure technical documents are reviewed and accepted by appropriate colleagues.
  • For all other deliverables, you are the final approval of submissions to the client and/or third parties.
  • Ensure that design issues identified at package level are escalated and resolved efficiently.
  • Coordinate assumption and decision registers, design action registers and risk registers for the design package.
  • Ensure that the Design Change Control process is implemented at package level and initiate change process.
  • Ensure compliance with Project Requirements and Works Information.
  • Manage package interfaces with other designers.
  • Ensure design package interfaces with third parties are addressed.

What You’ll Bring

  • Experience within a similar role within an appropriately sized engineering organisation.
  • Educated to degree or higher level or equivalent in a numerate discipline, typically Engineering discipline (or related).
  • Have excellent communication and presentation skills in English, both written and verbal and the ability to report at both Project and Board level.
  • Ability to manage teams of people in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to plan and manage own time.

Nice to have

  • Membership of an appropriate Professional body, typically Chartered member of Institute of Civil Engineering or an international equivalent professional status.
  • Previous experience working on a major rail or infrastructure project.
