This role is to join the construct engine of Mace business and support the public and life science business unit. You will be responsible for managing all the sustainability aspects on key projects of the BU and provide direct support to the BU lead.
You’ll be responsible for:
- Delivering purpose-led and measurable outcomes on live projects allocated to you.
- Delegating tasks to the junior team working on projects with you where applicable, supporting their professional development.
- Ensuring all targets (legal, client and Mace) are being delivered on projects.
- Doing the basics right – legal compliance, legislation, Mace Way. Ensure projects contribute to the Mace business plan KPIs and targets.
- Data collection and reporting ensuring good quality (i.e. QA the data sets) and identify insights that you can act upon. Drive improvements and better outcomes (not just reporting).
- Innovation – research, implement, measure and track, deliver meaningful and measurable outcomes.
- Awareness of client and market needs to evolve and maintain necessary competencies.
- Being a technical expert and promoting innovation in areas such as waste, energy/carbon, circularity, water, responsible sourcing of materials, and sustainable buildings.
- Supporting work winning through bid support, innovation and client liaison were advised by the sustainability BU lead. Complete in a timely manner, ensuring the sustainability message is delivered in an appropriate way to exceed the clients’ expectations but ensuring it is deliverable. The sustainability BU lead will do final review of bid content.
- Completing competitor analysis for your division and feed information to the sustainability BU lead to inform BU plans.
- Regular engagement with your client, consultants and supply chain, not only about live projects, but also to gather insights and understand the pipeline of work (share knowledge, check in, provide informative insights, project updates and case studies).

- Strong leadership, integrity and motivational skills are essential, recognising that this is an industry and discipline in which collaborative arrangements and the co-location of project teams is the preferred way of working.
- Share knowledge and insights from the project with the sustainability BU lead, including case studies and thought leadership.
- Industry engagement or participation. Contribute and support the wider industry regarding sustainability insights and knowledge, whether through external events, Mace communications or internal events.

- Strong and engaging communicator, articulate and open, and comfortable when representing the company and clients in a public forum, attending internal and external events to represent and raise the profile of Mace and the practice group.
- Champion the BU’s contribution to the delivery of the Mace business strategy priorities and corporate targets, in particular, awareness of project carbon metrics, while driving an increase in the BU’s carbon handprint.
- Quality control, know your projects sustainability numbers, and champion them across the teams.
You’ll need to have:
- Relevant degree in an applicable field such as environmental science, sustainability, engineering, or a related discipline and membership of an environmental or sustainability body.
- Extensive experience in sustainability management within the construction industry, particularly in the public sector.
- Strong knowledge of sustainability principles, practices, and regulations, on including carbon and green building certifications (BREEAM, WELL, LEED, NABERS).
- Hold BREEAM AP qualification.
- Proven track record of developing and implementing sustainability strategies and initiatives on construction projects.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Experience in managing and coaching other sustainability professionals.
- Proven track record of sustainability work > 5 years.
- Be able to translate technical topics into layperson language and articulate the value of sustainability.
- Communication skills, both oral and written.
- Be self-motivated and able to self-manage.
