About the project

Curzon Street station is a major new infrastructure development in Birmingham city centre. The new £800m HS2 station development forms part of the new HS2 network between London and the North and will provide a catalyst for development across the East side of Birmingham. As a leading station, Curzon Street strives to provide a centre of excellence for the development of best practice reporting and management models.

About the role

The Sustainability Lead will provide strategic leadership for environmental management, sustainability, compliance assurance and performance reporting across the Curzon Street project. The role is responsible for establishing, maintaining and continuously improving environmental systems, standards and ways of working to ensure compliance with HS2, MDJV and Mace Construct requirements. Working closely with the Stakeholder & Engagement Lead, MDJV partners and the supply chain, this role will drive compliance with the Environmental Management System (EMS) and Environmental Minimum Requirements (EMR), while leading a team of environmental specialists, consultants and technical experts.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead the production, maintenance and ongoing compliance of the project's Environmental Management Plans and associated systems including the identification of significant environmental aspects, impacts and consents.
  • Ensure compliance with HS2 Environmental Minimum Requirements, including the Construction Code of Practice, planning requirements and environmental requirements.
  • Lead environmental incident and complaint investigations, including evidence gathering, root cause analysis, corrective action close-out and reporting to senior leadership and HS2 where required.
  • Oversee environmental monitoring on site and maintain accurate records of environmental performance and compliance.
  • Undertake regular site inspections and audits of construction activities and supply chain operations.
  • Periodically review method statements and technical documents to ensure completeness and conformance with contractual, legal and environmental requirements.
  • Build project-level understanding of relevant environmental requirements and develop mitigations to minimise impacts on the construction programme.
  • Work with Planning Managers to incorporate key environmental and sustainability milestones into the programme.
  • Periodically review environmental processes within the project Quality Management System and align improvements with relevant MDJV teams.
  • Develop and maintain the environmental risks and issues log for reporting to senior leadership.
  • Lead delivery of the project’s carbon target and carbon management approach, working closely with design, delivery and commercial teams.
  • Lead the project’s BREEAM certification requirements, ensuring evidence, responsibilities and progress are actively managed.
  • Engage the supply chain on environmental and sustainability requirements, performance expectations and opportunities for improvement.
  • Promote innovation and best practice across environmental management, sustainability performance and carbon reduction outcomes.

What you’ll bring

  • Excellent knowledge and practical experience of environmental management and environmental legal requirements.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of Environmental Management Systems compliant with ISO 14001:2015.
  • Strong leadership and people management capability, including the ability to influence, negotiate and work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear reports and brief senior stakeholders.
  • Experience leading environmental incident investigations, root cause analysis and corrective action close-out.
  • Professional membership of an appropriate environmental body, such as ISEP, CIWEM, CIEEM or equivalent.

Desirable skills and experience

  • Knowledge of archaeology, air quality, noise and vibration, surface water and groundwater, contaminated land, waste, ecology and built heritage legislation and monitoring.
  • Construction site experience on major construction or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience delivering BREEAM certification requirements.
  • Understanding of PAS 2080 and its application to carbon management on infrastructure projects.
  • Strong data, digital reporting or database management skills.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, typically in an environmental discipline or related subject.
