Are you a Project Engineer looking for more ownership, technical variety and genuine long-term development? We are recruiting on behalf of a specialist engineering business that designs, develops and delivers bespoke risk management and process system solutions across safety-critical sectors, including defence, energy, aerospace, industrial environments and commercial diving. This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious engineer to join a highly experienced technical team, work closely with senior engineering leadership and take ownership of varied multidisciplinary projects.

The Role

As Project Engineer, you will play a key role in the delivery of bespoke engineering projects from initial specification through to design, build, testing and final handover. The role will involve working across mechanical, electrical, control and instrumentation disciplines, with a strong focus on quality, technical accuracy, client communication and project delivery. You will work closely with the Senior Engineer, Managing Director and wider technical team, giving you excellent exposure to experienced decision-makers and a clear opportunity to develop your technical and project leadership skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead project delivery from concept to completion, supporting the planning, coordination and execution of engineering projects across risk management, compressed air, process systems and safety-critical applications.
  • Act as a key technical point of contact for clients, suppliers and internal teams, ensuring project requirements are clearly understood and translated into practical engineering solutions.
  • Develop and manage technical documentation, including Functional Design Specifications, Factory Acceptance Tests, Site Acceptance Tests, technical reports, project records and supporting engineering documentation.
  • Support the design of bespoke engineered systems, including P&IDs, General Arrangement drawings, electrical schematics, instrumentation layouts and supporting technical drawings.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure third-party mechanical, electrical and control system assemblies are correctly specified, integrated and delivered in line with project requirements.
  • Contribute to control system activity, including PLC specification, configuration, programming support and commissioning, with exposure to Siemens and Allen Bradley systems being particularly useful.
  • Oversee testing, validation and commissioning support, ensuring equipment and systems meet client expectations, technical specifications and relevant industry standards.
  • Maintain a strong focus on quality, compliance and continuous improvement, supporting ISO 9001:2015 processes and ensuring engineering work is delivered with accuracy, consistency and attention to detail.
  • Identify and manage project risks, raising technical or commercial issues early and helping to find practical solutions that keep projects moving.
  • Support product development and R&D activity, helping to improve existing systems, develop new solutions and contribute to engineering change processes.
  • Work closely with senior engineering leadership, benefiting from technical mentoring while taking increasing ownership of project outcomes.
  • Represent the business professionally, maintaining high standards of communication, integrity and technical delivery across all project activity.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for a technically capable, detail-focused engineer with strong communication skills and a proactive approach. You will ideally have:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control & Instrumentation Engineering or a related discipline.
  • At least 3 years relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience in a project-based, multidisciplinary or bespoke engineering environment.
  • A strong understanding of engineering documentation, technical drawings and design processes.
  • Exposure to PLC systems, ideally Siemens or Allen Bradley.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001:2015, quality assurance or continuous improvement principles.
  • Competence with Microsoft Office and relevant CAD/design software.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Candidates who have achieved an engineering degree and are interested in working towards Chartered Engineer status would be particularly well suited.
