Mabey Hire is seeking an experienced Major Projects Director to lead and grow our strategic presence across the UK’s most complex building and infrastructure projects. This is a senior leadership role with national responsibility, focused on securing and developing long-term, high-value relationships on major projects requiring engineered temporary works solutions. Reporting to the Sales Director, the role will play a pivotal part in shaping future growth, strengthening our technical reputation, and positioning Mabey Hire as a partner of choice on complex schemes. The role carries significant autonomy, influence, and visibility across the business.

What You'll Be Doing

  • You will be a commercially driven leader with a strong engineering mindset, comfortable operating in complex, high-value project environments.
  • Develop and deliver the UK major projects sales strategy, aligned to long-term business objectives.
  • Identify, develop, and secure major opportunities across buildings and infrastructure sectors.
  • Drive sustainable year-on-year growth through strategic account development and opportunity conversion.

Engineering-Led Market Positioning

  • Proactively position Mabey Hire’s engineering capability on complex projects through CPDs, technical engagement, and industry forums.
  • Build strong relationships with client engineering leaders, reinforcing Mabey Hire’s reputation for technically robust, innovative solutions.
  • Act as a credible technical and commercial authority in the market.
  • Build and maintain senior-level relationships with Tier 1 contractors and key infrastructure clients.
  • Lead negotiations on complex, high-value contracts, ensuring commercial robustness and long-term value.
  • Work closely with the Sales Director and Commercial Director to ensure competitive, well-governed tender submissions.

Major Project Oversight

  • Provide commercial and strategic oversight of major projects from pre-contract through delivery.
  • Monitor performance, risk, and compliance against contractual, financial, safety, and governance requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering, operations, and logistics teams to ensure successful execution.

Team Leadership & Capability Development

  • Lead and develop the major projects team, ensuring clarity of roles, accountability, and performance expectations.
  • Mentor and develop future leaders within the function, supporting succession and capability growth.
  • Create a strong feedback loop between the market and product development to support innovation.

Governance & Reporting

  • Prepare and present structured performance updates against agreed KPIs to senior leadership.
  • Ensure alignment across the business on strategy, priorities, and major project commitments.

You Will Typically Bring:

  • A proven track record of winning and growing major projects within construction, infrastructure, or temporary works.
  • Strong understanding of engineered temporary works solutions such as Groundworks Support, Propping & Jacking and Temporary Bridging.
  • Experience building trusted relationships at senior engineering and commercial levels within Tier 1 contractors.
  • The ability to lead complex commercial negotiations and manage risk effectively.
  • A leadership style that balances strategic thinking with hands-on market engagement.
  • Experience likely to include: Senior major projects, business development, or commercial leadership roles.
  • Background in hire, temporary works, construction engineering, or a closely related sector.
  • Regular engagement with technical drawings, specifications, and engineered solutions.
