We are seeking an experienced Design Engineer to join a growing Glasgow-based team delivering complex architectural systems projects. This role combines technical design expertise with commercial awareness, supporting projects from tender through to fabrication. You will develop practical design solutions, produce accurate drawings and prepare competitive, compliant quotations while working closely with clients, suppliers and internal fabrication teams.
Main Responsibilities:
- Design & Technical
- Preparing faade and shop drawings using AutoCAD
- Developing details for curtain walling, punched windows, fixed lights and door ironmongery
- Interpreting architectural and structural drawings to produce coordinated faade designs
- Applying faade principles including glass specification, wind and barrier loads, weathering, drainage and thermal performance
- Liaising with design office and fabrication teams to deliver buildable, practical solutions
- Supporting design approvals, revisions and technical submissions
- Estimating & Commercial
- Reviewing tender documents, drawings and specifications to determine scope
- Preparing detailed cost estimates and quotations for faade packages
- Carrying out material take-offs from drawings
- Obtaining and evaluating supplier and subcontractor quotations
- Identifying risks, assumptions, exclusions and opportunities for value engineering
- Preparing and submitting tender documentation to deadlines
- Assisting with project handover following successful tenders
Essential Requirements:
- 5-10 years experience in faade (design, estimating or combined roles)
- Strong background in steel faade systems (aluminium systems also considered)
- High proficiency in AutoCAD and the ability to interpret architectural/structural drawings
- Good understanding of faade performance, loads, interfaces and waterproofing
- Strong numeracy, commercial awareness and analytical skills
- Excellent communication skills and confidence dealing with internal and external stakeholders
- High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple live workloads
Preferred Experience:
- Exposure to Schco UK systems and Jansen steel systems
- Experience with SchCal and/or LogiKal for design and pricing
- Strong Excel skills or similar estimating tools
- Experience with manufacturing and fabrication processes
- Familiarity with CWCT guidance, relevant BS/EN standards and UK Building Regulations relating to faade
Hours: Mon-Fri role 9am to 5pm
Salary: £45k-£55k (movement is possible on this range for the right candidate)
