The Building Surveyor will provide reliable assessments and evaluations of buildings to ensure they meet legal and safety standards. This role involves conducting thorough inspections, identifying structural issues, advising on repair and maintenance solutions, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The Building Surveyor plays a critical part in project planning, risk management, and sustainability initiatives, working closely with project teams, contractors and clients to deliver safe and efficient building solutions.
Responsibilities
- Organisational and Time Management Skills: The ability to oversee multiple projects and organise own time and deadlines to meet differing client needs.
- Accuracy and Due Diligence: The ability to identify, assess, and mitigate risks with excellent technical attention to detail. Strong measurement and cost planning skills.
- Effective Communication: An ability to communicate clearly and effectively across all levels, with clients and external stakeholders, including leading meetings when required.
- Team Work and Collaboration: Building healthy team and client relationships to foster a positive and cooperative work environment.
- Technical Knowledge & Skills: The ability to understand the administration of building contracts. Applying commercial project management knowledge, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope and to budget.
- Knowledge Development: To maintain and establish knowledge on industry trends, regulations and best practice.
Qualifications
- Education: Degree or Equivalent Experience in Building Surveying
- Professional: Working towards or hold MRICS/MCIOB, CIOBE or equivalent.
- Software/IT Tools: Essential: JCT Contract Software, NBS, GoReport and MS Projects
- Driving License: Yes
- Experience: It is essential anybody coming into this role has experience working within the construction industry as a building surveyor. Typically, we would look for somebody with a minimum of 3-4 years relevant experience working towards or having achieved professional status. They should ideally have knowledge in the following Regulations applicable to the Building Industry: Building Safety Act and Regulations, Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
What We're Looking For
- Providing a consultancy advisory service to clients on a range of building and property issues including technical, financial, legal, environmental, regulatory and restoration matters.
- Providing clients timely advice in relation to legal and planning issues including managing the planning and building regulations application process.
- Liaising with local planning bodies to ensure that projects meet safety, sustainability and preservation standards.
- Carrying out building surveys to a consistently high standard across multiple construction projects at any one time.
- Writing technical reports and preparing technical information in relation to commissions.
- Providing clients advice on property alterations, improvements, extensions and deterioration of defects of properties.
- Providing clients advice and support (and monitoring) with unexpected damage (fire, flood) on property including assessing the condition and any defects in the building.
- Assisting with insurance claims or a financial settlement where required.
- To assist and oversee any small scale building works when architects are not required.
- To work closely with other service divisions such as Cost Management and Projects to ensure that collaborative client projects are delivered on time with scope and to budget.
- Attending conferences and networking events. Build new business contacts/networks.
- Attending site meetings, and internal meetings as required to assist with communication and collaboration.
- To seek guidance from senior colleagues when required.
- Supporting and guiding junior members of staff with internal protocol and technical skills/knowledge.

ROLE CHALLENGES
This role should aim to work with minimum assistance and independently. They should be developing a balance between ensuring guidance is requested when needed without expecting the same level of supervision as the Assistant role. Communication and organisational skills are crucial at this level with the aim to develop a level of independence whilst continuing to build their knowledge of the administration of construction contracts from inception to completion.
