Job Description
We are looking for an experienced and talented news journalist to lead the news operation at Doctors.net.uk.
You will be a skilled and driven news journalist who thrives on hunting down exclusive and original stories to inform and engage your audience. You will have proven experience of meeting tight deadlines on a busy news desk, and good working knowledge of current media law, regulations and ethics. A journalism qualification is highly desirable. Experience of health and medical reporting is beneficial but not essential.
This is an exciting opportunity, and the role would suit a senior reporter looking to take the next step, as well as a seasoned news editor looking for a new challenge.
The Doctors.net.uk offices are based near Didcot, Oxfordshire, and we generally work on a 1-day office/4-day working from home pattern.
Objectives include:
- Manage and develop the Doctors.net.uk news operation to deliver original daily news coverage for the Doctors.net.uk audience
- Write 2-3 news articles each day
- Generate exclusive coverage
- Recruit and manage contributing freelance healthcare reporters
- Identify breaking news stories relevant to UK doctors
- Develop a strong network of contacts across the healthcare sector
- Produce features/news analyses
- Identify and brief in news topics to freelancers and internal teams
- Organise news coverage for bank holidays
- Ensure news content is pitched correctly for a UK physician audience
- Research new sources of relevant news content for UK doctors
- Review ideas and concepts for news features/analyses pitched by internal team members and contributors
- Review, edit and proofread news content, adhering to quality standards and house style
- Ensure news content contains nothing which is obscene, indecent, libellous or otherwise unlawful, contains commercial bias, or infringes the copyright or other rights of any third party
