The Opportunity

MK Consult is recruiting for an experienced Energy & Communal Heating Manager to join a large housing organisation in a newly created role. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a background in energy management, communal heating, heat networks, utilities, gas or building services who enjoys taking ownership of projects, working with technical teams and ensuring services are safe, compliant and operating effectively. You'll be working across a substantial housing portfolio, supporting the management of communal heating networks, energy supply contracts, metering and regulatory compliance. This is a varied, hands-on role combining project delivery, technical knowledge, contractor management and energy compliance.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Taking the lead on the management and improvement of communal heating systems and heat networks across the housing portfolio.
  • Getting out to sites across the North West and East Midlands to assess existing systems, identify issues and coordinate required works.
  • Supporting compliance with Ofgem regulations and evolving heat network requirements.
  • Managing energy metering arrangements across more than 1,000 meters.
  • Leading a programme of approximately 200 AMR meter upgrades, working with engineers and specialist contractors.
  • Ensuring risk assessments, site surveys and technical assessments are completed.
  • Project managing heating and energy improvement works from initial assessment through to completion.
  • Supporting the tendering, procurement and ongoing management of major energy and utility contracts.
  • Working with finance and housing teams on energy consumption, billing and service charges.
  • Monitoring energy performance, identifying opportunities for cost savings and improving efficiency.
  • Producing compliance, project and performance reports for senior management.
  • Managing relationships with energy suppliers, consultants, engineers and contractors.
  • Supporting the ongoing management and improvement of the organisation's communal heating and energy infrastructure.

Who We're Looking For

We're interested in speaking to people who have experience within social housing, energy, utilities, gas, mechanical services, communal heating or district heating. You'll ideally have experience of managing technical projects, working with engineers and contractors, understanding compliance requirements and coordinating works across multiple properties or sites. Experience of communal heating systems, heat networks, energy procurement, metering or utility management would be particularly beneficial. A relevant qualification in Energy Management, Utilities Management, Engineering, Building Services or a related discipline is required.

The Person

We're looking for someone who is proactive, organised and happy to take responsibility. This isn't a purely office-based role. You'll need to be comfortable getting out to sites, understanding the practical issues, working with engineers and contractors and ensuring projects are delivered through to completion. You'll also need strong communication skills, the ability to work across different departments and confidence managing your own workload. A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are required due to the geographical spread of the portfolio.

What's on Offer?

  • Salary: £45,289–£50,701 per annum
  • Hybrid working
  • 24 days' annual leave plus bank holidays and three additional days for Christmas closure
  • Additional annual leave entitlement based on length of service
  • Pension scheme
  • Occupational sick pay
  • Health and wellbeing benefits
  • Training and development opportunities
  • The opportunity to take ownership of a newly created role within a large housing organisation
