You’ll be joining our Highways maintenance team, as the UK’s number one highway maintenance contractor, our teams use the latest innovations to create effective solutions. What will you be doing?
As the HSW Advisor, you will provide professional Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) support to operational teams, ensuring work is planned and delivered safely, compliantly and to the required quality standard. You'll promote a positive safety culture through visible engagement, coaching and constructive challenge, and you will support leaders to embed company policies, procedures and the Business Management System (BMS) in day-to-day operations.
- You'll deliver proactive monitoring through inspections, audits and observations;
- You will support effective risk assessment and control for routine and higher-risk activities;
- You will ensure findings are translated into clear actions with agreed owners and timescales;
- Support incident and near-miss reporting and investigation, drive corrective and preventative actions, and provide accurate performance reporting to operational management and clients in line with legal, regulatory, client and company requirements;
- Ensure compliance with HSW legislation, ISO standards (45001, 14001, 9001), CDM Regulations and client requirements;
- Support effective risk management through hazard identification, RAMS, Safe Systems of Work and controls for high-risk activities;
- Provide practical site support through audits, inspections, behavioural safety observations and supply chain assurance;
- Verify inductions, support health surveillance and provide competent HSW advice to delivery teams and subcontractors;
- Lead or support investigations, analyse trends, embed lessons learned and maintain accurate records;
- Contribute to client and management reporting, support audits and accreditations, and drive improvement where performance falls below standard;
- Deliver HSW briefings, promote an incident-free culture, support competence assurance and maintain professional CPD.
What you’ll bring
- Sound knowledge of SHEQ principles, risk management and safe systems of work;
- Good working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation;
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills;
- Analytical approach to incident investigation and root cause analysis;
- Competent IT skills (Microsoft Office);
- NEBOSH General or Construction Certificate (or equivalent);
- Experience in a SHE/SHEQ advisory role;
- Knowledge of CDM Regulations (where applicable);
- Full UK driving licence (role dependent).
