Where will you be working? At M Group Energy we’re enabling the energy essential to support our lives. We provide an end-to-end service, delivering solutions in electricity transmission, distribution, renewable energy, EV, metering and home decarbonisation. This role will be within our Transmission & Renewables team. We design, build and commission substations at voltages up to and including 400kV. Our teams construct and maintain transmission lines and substations, ensuring the efficient and reliable delivery of electricity.
What will you be doing? As the Head of Estimating, you will play a strategic leadership role, overseeing and developing a team of estimators responsible for overseeing the commercial pre-construction function, ensuring the submission of accurate, competitive, and technically compliant tenders/bids for our Substations and Renewables projects. These are both for regulated and non-regulated clients. You will be responsible for shaping estimating strategy, collaborating with internal teams and external partners, and driving consistency and innovation across all estimating activity. We work across the UK with travel expected to meet your team and key stakeholders to understand how we work together. Hybrid supported alongside visible leadership and team meets. This is a pivotal role in supporting the growth of the division in energy infrastructure; you will help shape the future and growth of the team and team size will grow as we continue to evolve.
- Leading, managing, and developing a team of estimators to produce consistent, high-quality bids.
- Shaping the overall estimating strategy and driving competitiveness in tenders for projects ranging from LV up to 400kV.
- Reviewing high-value tenders, identifying risks, assessing opportunities, and implementing contingency measures in cost models.
- Driving improvements in estimating tools, templates, systems, and cost libraries, ensuring compliance with company procedures.
- Collaborating with design, procurement, operations, and business development teams to ensure technical specifications align with project costs.
- Overseeing the procurement and benchmarking of supplier quotations to ensure accurate costing.
- Ensuring all tenders are completed on time and ready for internal governance process prior to submission to clients.
What you’ll bring:
- An estimating background from an infrastructure environment with extensive experience of delivering capital projects.
- Knowledge of the non-regulated market and how renewables projects (solar/BESS/wind) are constructed, operated and maintained.
- Proven experience leading teams and managing workloads under tight deadlines.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills with the ability to communicate effectively and work with staff at all levels.
- Knowledge of how electrical infrastructure is constructed, operated and maintained with an appreciation and detailed understanding of National Grid and DNO Standards.
- The ability and desire to identify opportunities for improvement, and influence change.
- Organised with a high attention to detail and the ability to react to constant changing workloads.
- Excellent people management skills.
- Strong commercial acumen and knowledge of forms of contract (NEC, FIDIC).
- Understanding of the planning and sequencing of construction projects.
