We're working exclusively with a fast-growing, founder-led engineering business based in Exeter to find a Senior Mechatronics Engineer for a genuinely exciting and varied role. Our client designs and manufactures advanced robotic large-format additive manufacturing (LFAM) systems used across defence, aerospace, marine, and commercial sectors. Their platforms span industrial robotic arms and large-format gantry systems, all built around high-throughput pellet extrusion. This is cutting-edge technology.
The role is a senior, high-autonomy position. You'll take full technical ownership of a current programme through to production readiness, managing a mechatronics engineer beneath you, leading UI/HMI development alongside the software team, and driving systems integration across mechanical, electrical, and control domains. Longer term, you'll lead mechatronics and process engineering across the wider platform portfolio and have a clear path to a Head of Engineering role as the team scales. You'll work directly with the CTO and own your work packages end to end — scoping, executing, and reporting on your own initiative. This is not a role for someone who needs close direction.
What we're looking for:
- Hands-on experience with large-format or industrial additive manufacturing systems — pellet extrusion, FGF, WAAM, or similar
- Strong process engineering background — understanding how hardware parameters drive print quality, material behaviour, and structural performance
- Systems integration experience across mechanical, electrical, and control domains
- Experience leading UI or HMI development for industrial or manufacturing systems
- Proven people management — directing a small team, setting priorities, and owning the output
- Experience programming and configuring motion controllers for CNC or gantry-based systems
- Self-directed and proactive — you manage your own workload and surface problems before they become blockers
Experience with KUKA, ABB, or Fanuc robotic systems, Siemens CNC/motion control, or engineering polymers and composites in an AM context would be a bonus. SC clearance eligibility is advantageous for some programmes.
What's on offer:
- Competitive salary, reviewed regularly as the business grows
- Pension, 22 days holiday plus bank holidays
- Direct involvement in defence, aerospace, and marine programmes
- A small team where your decisions matter and your work is visible
- A genuine route to Head of Engineering
