The Role
We are recruiting for an experienced Attendance Officer to support schools, children and families to improve school attendance and reduce persistent absence. This is a varied, community-based role involving close partnership working with schools, pupils, parents and carers. You will help identify the reasons behind poor attendance and develop practical, supportive strategies to enable children and young people to engage fully with their education. The role offers remote working, alongside regular visits to schools and family homes.
Key Responsibilities
- Work directly with schools and families to improve pupil attendance.
- Manage a varied caseload of children and young people experiencing attendance difficulties.
- Carry out school and home visits.
- Meet with parents and carers to identify barriers to regular attendance.
- Support pupils at risk of becoming persistently absent.
- Develop appropriate strategies and interventions to improve attendance.
- Work independently within the relevant statutory framework using a restorative approach.
- Build positive relationships with pupils, families, schools and partner agencies.
- Maintain accurate case records and use data to support decision-making.
- Prepare clear reports and manage cases effectively.
- Contribute to the wider development of the attendance support service.
Essential Experience
- Previous experience working within an educational setting.
- Experience supporting school attendance.
- Experience working with children, young people and families.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build trusted relationships.
- Excellent organisational and report-writing skills.
- Confidence managing a busy and varied caseload independently.
- Good IT skills with experience maintaining accurate records and working with data.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a wider team.
- A full driving licence and access to a vehicle with business-use insurance.
- Ability to provide 2 professional references.
- Ability to meet the required Enhanced DBS requirements.
This role would particularly suit someone with previous experience as an Attendance Officer, Education Welfare Officer, School Attendance Officer, Family Support Worker or Education Support Officer.
