Lynx Employment Services are recruiting on behalf of our client for an experienced Principal Planning Officer to join a busy and dynamic planning team based in Halifax. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified planning professional to work on complex and major planning applications, contribute to strategic development projects, and play a key role in delivering high-quality planning services across the borough.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as Case Officer for complex and major planning applications
  • Negotiate with applicants and agents to ensure developments align with Calderdale's Local Plan
  • Lead negotiations on Section 106 Agreements
  • Provide pre-application advice for large and complex developments
  • Support planning enforcement activity, including enforcement notices
  • Present professional recommendations at Planning Committee meetings
  • Represent the Council at Hearings, Public Inquiries, and Court proceedings where required
  • Mentor and support junior colleagues within the team
  • Assist Team Leaders and Managers with service delivery and performance management
  • Sign off planning application reports and enforcement cases
  • Support the development of planning policy, guidance, and service improvements

Requirements

Essential

  • Degree recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) or equivalent demonstrable experience
  • Eligibility for full MRTPI membership
  • Strong knowledge of planning law, policy, and practice
  • Experience handling complex planning applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to produce accurate and high-quality reports
  • Experience working within politically sensitive environments
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and planning-related systems
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • Access to your own vehicle for work purposes

Desirable

  • Experience mentoring or supervising colleagues
  • Experience liaising with elected members and external agencies
