Practice Area/Department: Tax

Description

A leading full‑service law firm with a market‑leading reputation in Asset Management, M&A, and Dispute Resolution is seeking a 3–4 PQE Associate to join its Tax (Asset Management) team in London. The firm is known for providing exceptional client service, fostering collaboration, and maintaining a supportive, inclusive, and high‑performing environment.

Department

The Tax team is one of the most respected in the City, recognised for its technical excellence, commercial awareness, and thought leadership.

On the asset management side, the team advises some of the world’s largest fund managers on all aspects of their UK and European operations, working closely with the firm’s Financial Services and Funds practices to deliver joined‑up tax and regulatory advice.

Work includes fund structuring and formation across private equity, venture, credit, infrastructure, and real estate; tax issues relating to fund secondaries, GP stakes, and asset management M&A; and policy engagement with key industry bodies such as AIMA, the BVCA, and Invest Europe.

The team’s collaborative and inclusive culture encourages participation in firmwide initiatives including D&I, CSR, graduate recruitment, and business development. Associates benefit from extensive training and mentoring, with formal sessions, peer learning, and milestone development tailored to their experience level.

The Role

The firm is looking for a Tax Associate (Asset Management) with 3–4 years’ PQE. Prior experience in asset management tax or partnership tax is desirable but not essential — what matters most is a strong foundation in tax law, a commercial mindset, and enthusiasm for this area of work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advising on investment fund structuring and formation, both listed and unlisted, open‑ and closed‑ended vehicles.
  • Providing tax advisory services to major asset managers on carried interest, co‑investment, VAT, restructurings, and global mobility.
  • Advising on M&A transactions with a funds or asset management focus, including fund secondaries and GP stake deals.
  • Assisting clients with early‑stage tax disputes and interactions with HMRC.
  • Acting for investors, including pension funds, fund‑of‑funds, sovereign wealth funds, and family offices, on fund investments and secondary market transactions.
  • Collaborating with other sub‑groups within the Tax department, including Transactional and Incentives & Remuneration, and contributing to cross‑departmental projects.
  • Opportunities may arise for client secondments or placements with overseas law firms.

Person Specification

  • England & Wales qualified solicitor with 3–4 years’ PQE.
  • Strong academic background and a track record in tax law (experience in asset management or partnership tax advantageous).
  • Excellent technical, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Strong matter management and organisational ability.
  • Collaborative team player with a proactive approach.
  • Demonstrates alignment with the firm’s culture of excellence, inclusivity, and professional development.
