Requirements

  • Strong software engineering background, ideally in PHP/Laravel, MySQL, and SaaS or web application development.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or managing engineers, whether as a manager, tech lead, or senior engineer who has grown others.
  • First-time managers from a strong technical background are welcome.
  • Technical credibility to review approaches, challenge decisions constructively, and coach engineers on good practice.
  • Sound judgement on delivery, quality, testing, maintainability, trade-offs, and release risk.
  • Clear communication with non-technical stakeholders.
  • Talent for improving how teams work without adding unnecessary process.
  • Enthusiasm for applying AI practically across both product and engineering workflows.
  • Ability to reliably commute to or relocate to our Leith location before starting.
  • Work authorisation in the United Kingdom.
  • People management experience of 1 year is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop engineers through regular one-to-ones, honest feedback, and development and performance conversations.
  • Line manage, coach, and grow the team, helping engineers build confidence, capability, and ownership.
  • Help squads deliver predictably and sustainably by supporting planning, capacity, prioritisation, and risk management.
  • Spot blockers early and keep plans realistic and trade-offs visible.
  • Work with Tech Leads and senior engineers to strengthen code review, consistency, maintainability, and quality.
  • Coach engineers to think well about how they build.
  • Partner closely with Product Managers, QA, and leadership, communicating clearly with technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Identify what slows the team down and improve clarity, reduce friction, and build practical habits that lift delivery and quality.
  • Contribute hands-on where it genuinely helps the team, although this is not the core of the role.
