We are seeking an enthusiastic, proactive, and customer-service-oriented Grounds & Maintenance Assistant to support the day-to-day upkeep of the school’s buildings and external environment. This role combines groundskeeping with general maintenance and handyperson duties, ensuring a safe, clean, and well-maintained environment for students, staff, and visitors. The successful candidate will also contribute to the wider school community, with opportunities to engage with students on projects such as plant care and safe outdoor working practices.
Key Responsibilities- Grounds Maintenance
- Maintain school grounds including gardens, playgrounds, and pathways through mowing, strimming, pruning, planting, and general landscaping
- Carry out litter picking and ensure all external areas are clean and presentable
- Maintain trees and shrubs, including removing hazardous limbs
- Grit and treat walkways, car parks, and paths to ensure safety in all weather conditions
- Ensure drains, gullies, and outdoor areas are free from debris
- Maintain and treat outdoor furniture and fixtures (e.g., benches, tables)
- General Maintenance & Facilities Support
- Carry out general maintenance and handyperson tasks across school properties
- Assist with basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and decorating work
- Operate and monitor heating systems and plant equipment, making adjustments as required
- Support planned preventative maintenance programmes
- Set up and clear furniture for events, exams, and meetings (porterage duties)
- Assist with opening and closing the school, including security checks
- Respond to emergencies relating to gas, electricity, and water, and liaise with management or contractors as needed
- Support contractor and supplier coordination when required
- Operational Duties
- Move and handle furniture and equipment safely
- Dispose of waste materials in a safe and hygienic manner
- Maintain accurate maintenance records using systems such as Parago
- Ensure compliance with health & safety regulations and school policies
- Work flexibly, including occasional overtime, callouts, and shift cover during busy periods or staff absence
- Carry out any other reasonable duties within the scope of the role
- Good level of spoken and written English (additional languages such as French are a bonus)
- Physically fit and able to perform manual tasks, including lifting and working outdoors
- Basic knowledge of site maintenance (e.g., plumbing, heating, carpentry)
- Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive and practical approach
- Good organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills
- Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
- IT proficiency for maintenance systems and communication tools
- Ability to work at height
