Position to be filled from: 2nd September 2024
Reporting to the Lead Science Technician and Department coordinators as Line Managers, the Science Technician will provide support to the delivery of Science lessons in a well-resourced and efficient environment with due regard to the Health and Safety of all pupils and members of staff. He/she will ensure within his remit suitable laboratory equipment is available, adequately maintained and appropriately used as well as making sure that good working practices are implemented by promoting a safe working environment. He/she will prepare all necessary resources for experiment set-up/clearing and provide specific or ad hoc technical and administrative support to the department as and when required by the line management.
Role and Key Responsibilities
- To prepare apparatus, materials and solutions and set them up prior to the lessons, including the construction, preparation and checking of any specialist equipment.
- To retrieve and clean away apparatus and equipment after practical classes.
- To provide a daily support service to the Science laboratories and associated areas.
- Assist with the duties of absent colleagues to ensure practical requests can be delivered and installed on time in the classrooms.
- Liaise with line management/Coordinators whenever necessary to address any issue with the practical works’ calendar and related requests.
- To assist the teachers, as and when required, by providing support to students in practical sessions.
- To ensure, in cooperation with other Science Technicians, that appropriate stock levels of apparatus and materials are maintained, carrying out regular stock takings to assess future stock requirements.
- Ensure that the laboratory facilities are maintained in a clean, functional and safe state, reporting any problems through the appropriate channels.
- Take an active role in ensuring all Health and Safety procedures are met.
- Take part in regulatory checks and maintenance of lab’s equipment in cooperation with the technicians’ team and the site Facilities manager when external contractors are involved.
- Control reception of orders and correct storage of consumables and materials.
- Provide administrative support to the Science departments, helping with purchase orders preparation and taking part in department meetings as directed by the Lead Science Technician.
Expected Skills and Knowledge
- The candidate must have a Science related degree in Chemistry – additional qualification in Physics or Biology would be appreciated.
- Must have a previous working experience within an educational laboratory setting.
- Excellent teamwork capabilities and interpersonal skills.
- You will need to be flexible and have previous knowledge of materials preparation, experiment preparation and equipment maintenance along with strict adherence to Health and Safety.
- Keen interest in keeping up to date with current legislation and modern scientific laboratory practices.
- Able to react knowledgeably in potentially hazardous situations.
- Very good command of English is required (and French would be a plus).
Working hours per year
38h per week over 40 weeks per annum (1460h per annum) according to a timetable set by your manager.
