An established and growing mechanical and civil engineering contractor based in the East Midlands is seeking an experienced Works / Operations Manager to oversee operations within a busy fabrication facility. The company specialises in the fabrication, welding and installation of complex pipework systems, structural steel and large-scale infrastructure projects across the UK including cross-country pipelines, AGIs and major civil works for national oil & gas clients.
Due to continued growth and major project wins, an opportunity has arisen for a hands-on Works / Operations Manager to lead the fabrication operations from the company’s head office facility. This is a key leadership role responsible for managing fabrication activities, supporting project delivery, and ensuring operational excellence across structural steel and pipework fabrication.
The Role
As Works / Operations Manager you will take responsibility for the day-to-day management of the fabrication facility, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards. You will work closely with the senior leadership team and play an important role in planning, project delivery, estimating support and client relationship management.
Key Responsibilities
- Managing a busy fabrication workshop covering structural steel and pipework fabrication
- Planning, allocating and supervising fabrication teams to meet project programmes
- Ensuring projects meet quality, safety and customer satisfaction targets
- Monitoring works to ensure compliance with client specifications and engineering standards
- Liaising with internal teams, engineers, clients and subcontractors
- Supporting the pre-construction and estimating phases of projects
- Maintaining fabrication records, diaries and documentation
- Implementing and promoting Health, Safety & Environmental standards
- Delivering toolbox talks in collaboration with HS&E teams
- Ensuring high standards of quality control, housekeeping and workshop organisation
- Building strong relationships with clients and stakeholders
- Motivating teams to deliver projects on time and to budget
Candidate Requirements
We are looking for a strong engineering leader with a background in fabrication, structural steel or pipeline projects. Essential experience includes:
- Minimum HNC / HND in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
- At least 5 years experience within engineering or fabrication management
- Experience managing structural steel and pipe fabrication operations
- Knowledge of ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems
- Experience working with ISO 3834 and BS EN 1090 standards
- Strong leadership and workforce management skills
- Ability to read and interpret piping, structural and civil engineering drawings
- Experience supporting project engineering and design management
- Strong organisational and time management abilities
- Proven experience completing risk assessments and method statements
- Commercial awareness and project delivery focus
Desirable:
- Experience using Microsoft Project or project planning tools
- Experience conducting site surveys and producing drawings
