About LUX
LUX is an exciting start-up daring to disrupt existing industry norms and take the lead in revolutionising the approach to Liquid Hydrogen. We are based in Oxfordshire, the centre of Cryogenics R&D in the UK, ideally located for developing our unique Clean ‘Green’ liquid Hydrogen technology. LUX is currently developing the technology to ultimately supply our customers with Clean liquid Hydrogen on-site-on-demand.

Role
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be leading LUX’s core technology design and development on a range of projects and tasks. You will be working with other team members such as project managers, and senior leadership, in addition to external suppliers, to ensure that projects are delivered successfully. The role requires applying your skills and knowledge across a broad range of problems and challenges, sourcing alternative solutions independently and efficiently.
Responsibilities
- ‘Cradle to grave’ Design and development of mechanical systems and components for various projects
- Create detailed parts/models and assemblies, using CAD software (Siemens NX)
- Ensure Design for Manufacture is implemented into design solutions
- Produce engineering drawings working to BS8888 following engineering best practice
- Conduct tolerance stack analyses for components and assemblies
- Collaborate with team members and external suppliers to ensure design specifications are met
- Perform system design and integration, including the selection of appropriate components and materials
- Create P&IDs for various test rigs, sub-systems, systems and testing purposes
- Perform basic hand calculations to support design process e.g. bending moments, hoop/axial stress etc
- Conduct and support risk assessments for engineering development and testing needs
- Perform basic simulations to assess design integrity and performance assessments, such as low-level FEA to verify hand-calculations etc
- Conduct testing and validation of components to ensure functionality and reliability of mechanical designs
- Provide technical support and guidance to junior designers and engineers
- Identify and resolve design issues using first principles thinking
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or related STEM discipline, OR, additional 2+ years of professional experience in design engineering roles
- Minimum 5 years relevant experience in mechanical design engineering roles
- Experienced with Siemens NX CAD software, including part & assembly design, and drafting
- Ability to create detailed schematics and technical drawings
- Strong mechanical knowledge and understanding of engineering principles
- Extensive experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and performing tolerance stack analysis
- Experience with NX surfacing
- Note you must have a valid UK driving licence and a suitable vehicle for business-related travel as part of the role
Preferred Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Masters degree or higher in Mechanical engineering or related STEM discipline
- 7+ years’ relevant experience in mechanical design engineering roles
- Expert user in Siemens NX CAD software, including part & assembly design, surfacing, and drafting
- Experience in pressure vessel sizing, design and development projects
- Experience in valve design, selection, and development projects
- Proficient in one or more coding languages
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a focus on first principles thinking
- Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members and external suppliers
- Experienced in designing a diverse range of mechanical components, systems and projects
- Familiar with Hydrogen related design principles and engineering
- Experienced/knowledgeable in advanced manufacturing processes such as Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing)
- Experience in cryogenic engineering projects
- Strong evidence of technical problem solving
