Job Overview:

Perform conceptual, Pre-FEED, FEED and detailed analyses and design as per design basis, project specifications, design codes and standards. Materials Lead for designated Projects for Upstream Material Selection and Corrosion Control. Responsible for all conceptual, Pre-FEED, FEED & EPCI materials selection and technical support for both subsea and topsides. Responsible for defining and verifying all Project upstream materials selection. Assess and conclude (earliest in FEED) on any identified materials related items previously captured for FEED optimization. Development and writing of the Project Materials Selection Report and Material Selection Diagrams (MSD’s). Development and writing of all Project Materials/Corrosion Control Specifications and Reports. Long Lead Equipment (LLE) - Technical definition and support. CS and CRA clad/lined pipe and related components technical procurement support including sour service corrosion testing scope definition and follow-up. Active participation in technical bid evaluation and design reviews. Identify credible corrosion and Environmental Assisted Cracking (EAC) threats. Conduct corrosion modelling assessments. Identify and propose corrosion mitigation & control requirements including chemical injection, coating requirements and any inhibitor qualification testing programs. Work closely with Project Welding Engineers and Engineering Managers to align on all materials and welding aspects for the Project. Liaise with Senior Coatings Engineer(s) to align on all coating aspects for Projects.


Responsibilities

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Focal Project Materials point for McDermott, Company and Vendors.
  • Define and conclude all Materials Selection for subsea and topsides systems.
  • Leads and ensures the preparation of: Conceptual, Pre-FEED, FEED and Detailed Design analyses, specifications calculations, reports and procedures.
  • Fully assess and conclude/recommend materials related FEED optimization items.
  • Conducts corrosion modelling assessments.
  • Reviews project engineering design basis.
  • Resolves technical queries for material and corrosion issues.
  • Inputs for purchase requisitions and reviews of vendor and subcontractor submittals.
  • Discipline Tender Bid Evaluations (TBE) reviews.
  • Attends bid clarification meetings.
  • Vendor document reviews. Responsible for final review/approval of all Vendor documents for Materials & Corrosion related aspects.
  • Reviews Client comments, provides responses/clarifications and closes actions.
  • Attends PO Kick-off Vendor Meetings, Pre-Inspection meetings at vendors and sub-vendors works as required.
  • Provides progress reports as necessary for engaged projects.
  • Participation in HAZOPs, HAZIDs and Project risk assessments.
  • Compatibility assessments of non-metallic materials with chemical injection philosophies.
  • Development, review and approval of Material Selection Diagrams (MSD’s).
  • AVL/Supplier & Manufacturer Qualification - Technical definition and support.
  • Subsea Coatings - Technical definition and support through close coordination and liaison with Senior Coatings Engineer/SME.
  • MPQT testing of line-pipe, CRA's, forgings, fittings, castings - Technical definition and support including sour service corrosion testing scope definition and follow-up.
  • Troubleshooting and support specifically for fabrication related issues with site visits as necessary.

  • Have full ownership and be accountable to the Project Directors & Managers, Project Engineering Managers and Lead Principal Materials & Coatings Engineer (KL).
  • Must be a leader, excellent communicator and team player.
  • Must be able to work and communicate closely with McDermott Global Functional Materials, Corrosion, Welding and Coating colleagues.
  • Mentor other department engineers in Material Selection and Corrosion Control.
  • Be pro-active and get ahead of potential problems.
  • Demonstrate technical and commercial acumen and ensure project is getting most value for money.
  • Ensure technical integrity and understanding of the full project scope details.
  • Maintain highest standards of ethics & compliance and in accordance with McDermott policies.
  • Be able to work as part of a multi-discipline and multi-cultural team.
  • Responsible to prepare and issue minutes of meetings for all materials meetings attended and when requested.
  • Attends progress meetings with the Vendor, McDermott and Client per Project needs.
  • Have a current passport and be willing to travel to Global McDermott Offices & Fabrication Facilities, vendors and their sub-vendors’ works.
  • Computer literate on corrosion modelling programs.
  • Computer literate on Microsoft programs: Word, Access, Power Point, Excel, Project.
  • Open to work for our Global Projects in different time zones.
  • Open to business travel, remote and in-office working.
  • EPC mindset and flexibility in working/delivering projects for McDermott
  • Perform conceptual, FEED, and detailed analyses and design as per design basis, project specifications, design codes, and standards
  • Apply in-depth skills and broad knowledge of the business to address complex problems and nonstandard situations
  • Prepare clear and accurate detailed design calculations and analyses including design reports and - procedures
  • Manage own time to meet objectives and (as Lead Engineer) forecast and plan resource requirements
  • Clearly communicate and explain difficult concepts and persuade others to adopt a point of view
  • When acting as Lead Metallurgy Engineer, in addition:
  • Direct small metallurgy team as a Lead Engineer
  • Lead the metallurgy engineering design of the assigned work area and completed within the planned schedule and budget, in accordance with standards, MDR, and project-specific procedures and to a high professional standard
  • Plan, organize, and direct all aspects of metallurgy execution on the assigned project including scope, deliverables, schedule, and all manpower resources - agree allocations with the Metallurgy Manager
  • Ensure interfaces and deliverables are clearly identified
  • Maintain responsibility for progress and productivity, identifying any required corrective action
  • Act as project representative for the Discipline during meetings with the Project Team, Customer discipline lead, and relevant agencies such as certifying authorities, auditors, third parties, etc.
  • Can hold the role of coordinator/team lead/manager of metallurgy group
  • Develop and review material selection deliverables such as specifications, material selection reports, and diagrams Coordinate and contribute to risk-based inspection study
  • Perform unsupervised vendor document review Contribute to bid clarification meetings, bid reviews, and Pre Inspection Meetings as required Works on common tasks and more complex tasks and supervise and coach less experienced colleagues
  • Work independently on complex metallurgy tasks Act as lead metallurgist on more complex and multi-office execution projects
  • Coordinate, perform, and evaluate troubleshooting, failure investigations, and metallurgy-related inspection activities
  • Contribute to proposals on metallurgy-related items
  • Common tasks are:
  • Become fully familiar with the project scope of work, specifications, schedule, and all inter-discipline requirements; including identifying concerns as early as practicable and taking appropriate initiatives to address the issues Interpret contractual requirements as they relate to engineering execution
  • Preparation of material selection reports and diagrams for refinery units, petrochemical units, offshore installations, etc.
  • Develop and prepare metallurgical technical specifications for projects
  • Supervise and review the work of metallurgy engineers
  • Contribute to the development of a risk-based inspection (RBI) study
  • Identify changes to scope and promptly raise change notifications, including providing any necessary supporting documentation and estimates Provide similar support for Variation Orders
  • Interface with other departments to obtain input for Discipline designs and drawings
  • Maintain close coordination with other engineering disciplines, Planning, and Project Management Team, as required
  • Document substantive communications (communications that result in significant decisions or assignment of actions) and forward copies to the Discipline Lead Engineer and Metallurgy Manager
  • Prepare estimates for bid proposals, including technical query reviews, execution statements, and work-hour estimates, identifying software requirements and any other project-specific requirements
  • Prepare bids and the project's metallurgy engineering budget and execution plans, updating as required
  • Raise technical queries to obtain missing information, clarify work scope, and maintain preferred McDermott procedures, specifications, standards, practices, and operational requirements
  • Prepare, review, and (as Lead Engineer) approve metallurgy engineering design basis, philosophies, and technical specifications
  • Participate in finalizing deliverables lists and deliverables, ensuring compliance with specifications and functional integrity
  • Review project schedule and fabrication schedule in relation to construction sequence, milestones, and engineering scope
  • Attend project kickoff and review meetings, vendor meetings, engineering meetings, and offshore site surveys, as required
  • Provide technical direction and review of Designers producing products related to Process Engineering
  • Prepare, review, and (as Lead Engineer) approve design reports and procedures
  • Assist in providing necessary design inputs to other disciplines to enable them to proceed with their deliverables
  • Review and (as Lead Engineer) approve vendor and subcontractor submittals, checking for compliance with project specifications and providing comments as necessary
  • Present issues and problems to Customers in a timely manner and assist the Lead Engineer in negotiating resolution in accordance with project and company requirements
  • Guide less experienced engineers on MDR and Discipline procedures, standards, worksheets, design calculations, software, requisitions, technical bid evaluations, technical queries, etc.
  • Supervise and guide assigned engineers and coordinate with project Lead Designers for Discipline engineering and design deliverables
  • Monitor costs of own work processes
  • Responsible for the engineering integrity of the assigned work area
  • Develop communication and presentation skills (e.g., write technical papers, participate in conferences and/or seminars, present design solutions and/or present topics at lunch and learns; etc.)
  • Lead the metallurgy team during project audits (internal, Customer, and third-party technical audits) and Design Reviews

Project: Lead Engineer, Project Engineering Manager or Project Manager
Functional: Supervising Department Manager
Liaise with: All Engineering disciplines, Fabrication Group, Safety Department, Project Management Team, Document Control,
Project Planner, Project Cost Controller, QC and Certification Group, Procurement Group, Subcontractors, Vendors, and
Customers
Supervises: Senior Engineers and Engineers


Qualifications

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • 15-20 years of experience in oil and gas with a major contractor or consultant predominantly performing detail design
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Engineering
  • Detailed knowledge of design techniques and analysis methods and detailed knowledge of the theory, content, and application of standards, codes, and guidelines as applicable
  • Knowledgeable in project coordination and execution skills
  • Preferably Registered Engineer in Training (EIT) or member of professional engineering society as applicable
  • Eager to learn and open to continuous development
  • Be or become a subject matter expert on one or more typical metallurgy subjects
  • Working knowledge of English, both oral and written
  • HSE, TQM and cost-conscious
  • Show flexibility and ensure proper hand-over with regards to:
    • The reassignment to other departments, construction sites, and fabrication yards
    • The replacement of colleagues during illness and holidays
    • The provision of assistance to other colleagues with heavy workloads (also other projects) when possible/desirable
    • The managing/learning of future current working methods and software applications
  • Accredited engineering degree as may be required by specific regions
