A leading UK-based construction and engineering business is seeking an experienced Business Development Director to drive growth across highly technical construction markets. This role will focus on securing design & build and facilities contracts within the pharmaceutical, life sciences, and space sectors, supporting the company’s strategic expansion across complex, regulated environments.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in identifying, developing, and converting opportunities, leveraging both existing relationships and new market engagement to position the business as a trusted delivery partner in high-value, technically demanding projects across the UK.

Key Responsibilities
  • Business Growth & Strategy
    • Develop and execute a UK-wide business development strategy targeting pharma, life sciences, and space infrastructure markets.
    • Identify and secure new project opportunities across design & build, EPC, and facilities delivery models.
    • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of high-value, complex projects aligned with business growth objectives.
    • Track market trends, investment pipelines, and competitor activity to inform strategy.
  • Client Development & Relationship Management
    • Build and maintain senior-level relationships with clients, developers, consultants, and key stakeholders.
    • Leverage existing networks while proactively developing new client relationships across target sectors.
    • Actively represent the business at industry events, conferences, and networking forums.
  • Opportunity Conversion
    • Lead and support bid and tender activity, working with internal technical and commercial teams.
    • Engage early in project lifecycles to help shape client requirements and position the business effectively.
    • Develop compelling win strategies highlighting technical expertise, innovation, and delivery capability.
    • Use market insight and sector knowledge to identify emerging opportunities and inform decision-making.
    • Support marketing and thought leadership initiatives within targeted industries.

    • Work closely with design, engineering, commercial, and operational teams to ensure a cohesive approach.

Key Requirements
  • Proven track record in business development within construction, engineering, or technical infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated success in winning design & build and/or facilities contracts in regulated sectors.
  • Experience across pharma, life sciences, advanced manufacturing, or space/aerospace-related projects.
  • Strong, established network of relevant industry contacts across the UK.
  • Strong commercial acumen with a track record of winning high-value work.
  • Ability to understand and articulate complex technical solutions.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills at senior level.
  • Strategic thinker with a proactive, results-driven approach.
Qualifications
  • Degree or equivalent in engineering, construction, or a related discipline (preferred).
