An established and growing organisation within the construction sector is seeking to appoint an experienced Commercial Director to join its senior leadership team. The business is on a clear growth journey and has a strong reputation for delivery, governance and longâterm client relationships.
As Commercial Director, you will hold strategic accountability for the commercial performance, governance and maturity of the business. Reporting directly to the Senior Director, you will lead the commercial function across the full project lifecycleâfrom tender strategy and contract negotiation through delivery, valuation, margin protection and final account.
You will provide executive oversight of projectâlevel commercial performance, ensuring robust cost forecasting, CVR discipline, change control and cashflow management are consistently embedded. Where required, you will intervene directly on underperforming or highârisk projects to stabilise delivery and protect business outcomes.
A key element of the role is leading, developing and strengthening the commercial team. You will set clear standards, governance frameworks and performance expectations, while mentoring senior commercial staff and building succession capability. You will also work closely with operational leadership to embed strong commercial awareness and accountability across delivery teams.
- Lead and implement the organisation's commercial strategy in line with growth plans and business objectives
- Hold overall accountability for margin protection, cost control, cashflow and sustainable financial performance
- Provide executive oversight of valuations, payment applications and cash collection in line with contractual entitlement
- Lead contract risk review and commercial due diligence prior to project commencement
- Identify commercial risk and opportunity across the portfolio, leading proactive mitigation and valueârecovery strategies
- Shape and lead negotiation strategy for variations, claims, final accounts and dispute avoidance
- Build, lead and develop a highâperforming commercial function through coaching, mentoring and succession planning
- Deliver clear, highâquality commercial reporting and insight to support senior decisionâmaking
- Drive continuous improvement of commercial systems, processes and governance frameworks
To be successful in this role, you will be a proven senior commercial leader with significant experience operating at board or executive level within a projectâbased or contractâled environment.
- Strong expertise across the full commercial and contractual lifecycle
- Quantity Surveying Qualification
- Advanced negotiation skills and experience managing complex commercial risk
- Deep financial and commercial acumen, including CVRs, cashflow, forecasting and margin management within a commercial construction environment
- A track record of developing highâperforming commercial teams and embedding governance
- Relevant professional qualifications (e.g. commercial, financial or constructionârelated) would be advantageous.
