Interim Financial Controller (12-Month Fixed-Term Contract)

Location: Glasgow

Working Pattern: Hybrid (minimum 3 days in the office)

Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Contract: 12 Months

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and commercially focused Interim Financial Controller to join our client's finance leadership team on a 12-month contract. This is a high-profile role offering the opportunity to lead the finance agenda across major strategic projects, oversee the organisation's capital investment portfolio, and support the delivery of key business initiatives. Working closely with senior stakeholders, you will provide financial leadership, technical expertise, and strategic insight while supporting the Head of Finance in managing the Financial Accounting function. This position is ideally suited to a qualified accountant who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys combining technical excellence with commercial influence and project leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the finance lead on key strategic business projects and transformation initiatives.
  • Provide financial analysis and commercial support for major business projects and investment decisions.
  • Partner with project teams to ensure effective financial governance, forecasting, and reporting across the capital expenditure portfolio.
  • Lead and support the Project Accounting team, ensuring robust financial management and accurate reporting.
  • Provide technical accounting guidance on complex accounting judgements and treatments.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Financial Accountant to maintain strong financial controls and deliver high-quality financial reporting.
  • Support the preparation of monthly and periodic reporting, including profit and loss, cash flow, balance sheet, and capital investment reporting.
  • Assist with statutory accounts, tax compliance, regulatory reporting, and working capital management.
  • Support the Head of Finance with leadership and line management responsibilities across the Financial Accounting team.
  • Identify business risks, drive process improvements, and contribute to continuous enhancement of the finance function.

About You

Essential

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
  • Significant post-qualification experience in a Financial Controller, Senior Finance Manager, or similar leadership role.
  • Proven experience leading the finance workstream on strategic business projects.
  • Strong capital expenditure and investment appraisal experience.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels of an organisation.
  • Strong commercial awareness, analytical capability, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience managing teams and developing high-performing finance professionals.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a varied and demanding environment with competing priorities and tight deadlines.

Desirable

  • Experience working within a highly regulated or asset-intensive industry.
  • Previous rail industry experience.
