The Role
This technical role is responsible for overseeing the operational efficiency of Private, Public cloud, and on-premises environments. Reporting directly to the CTO, the Head of Platform has complete responsibility for associated costs, KPIs, deadlines, and driving improvements to the existing environment.
The role requires extensive experience in Microsoft Azure, 365, servers, physical networks, and security best practices. You will be accustomed to working in a demanding environment, enjoy being hands-on, while also managing a small team of Infrastructure and DevOps engineers.
Core Skills
- Deep technical experience in infrastructure design, build, and deployment, including private and public cloud, networking, connectivity, storage, and virtualization
- Strong technical experience of the Microsoft/Azure ecosystem (Networking/solutions, Monitor, Licensing/Cost Management, IaaS/PaaS services) and Infrastructure as Code
- Experience working with Azure technologies such as virtual machines, Cloud Services, web apps, function apps, Azure Active Directory, Virtual Networks, etc.
- Creating and managing CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps, Octopus Deploy, and Terraform to deploy both infrastructure and applications
- Experience in managing both project and operational change; including estimating, resource allocation, status reporting, and cost management
- Experience in modernizing/migrating existing systems to cloud-based serverless architecture
- Well-versed in Windows Operating Systems and Active Directory domain services
- Experienced in the use of Azure platform services, PowerShell/Azure PowerShell, and the Azure Portal
- Experience with configuration management and automation technologies
- Proficiency in cloud cost optimization strategies
- Knowledge of security compliance standards (e.g., ISO 27001, GDPR)
Duties & Responsibilities
Including, but not limited to:
- Accountable for the design and architecture of Lumon\’s internal and Azure Cloud networks to ensure our environments are scalable, future-proof, and stable.
- Working with the CTO and Information Security Manager to maintain business-appropriate secure systems
- Maintain all private and public cloud configuration documents and diagrams. Keep up-to-date documentation of all servers, racks, systems, and configurations
- Mentor and provide guidance to Infrastructure and DevOps Engineers
- Ongoing proactive maintenance of Server and Network systems
- Research and development of new ideas and technologies to improve cloud Infrastructure
- Provide independent reviews of Patch, Anti-malware, and Security systems
- Proactive monitoring of Network, Server, and Storage systems using group standard tools
- Responding to notifications/alerts for failed hardware/software, and assign to appropriate Infrastructure Engineer as required
- Assisting in capacity planning and monitoring of storage and systems at all times
- Develop and maintain communication, dependency, and reliance plans for system reboots and outages
- Escalate and own calls sent to Infrastructure line support or outside vendors, returning the result and relaying resolution back to the Service Centre where needed
- Develop and implement disaster recovery plans
- Contribute to strategic planning and technology roadmap development
Ideal Candidate
- Minimum of 8 years\’ experience in IT
- Minimum of 2 years\’ management experience
- Customer service-driven, understanding the importance of the person and the business behind the technology
- Ability to be both technical and commercial
- Experience managing a small team of engineers and leading multiple projects
- Business literate, confident, and enthusiastic about technology
- Tenacious problem solver who demonstrates creativity in finding solutions
- Any relevant Azure Cloud, certifications (e.g., Azure Solutions Architect Expert, CISSP) would be advantageous.
- Industry-specific experience would be advantageous.
