About the Role
Leeds City College are seeking a SEND Support Worker to join our Future Pathways department. In this role, you will support students with learning and cognition difficulties by delivering tailored interventions and working closely with teachers and High Needs staff to help learners achieve their EHCP targets. You will contribute to learning activities and assessments, support students in a range of settings including workshops and work placements, assist with examinations, and provide personal, physical, and medical care where required. Our Future Pathways Department supports young people aged 16–25 with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)—including those with SEND, SEMH needs, or a history of educational disengagement (NEET)—to access education and employment. Admission is exclusively via local authority consultation to ensure we can meet the student's EHCP needs. Please note, this is a reduced year (39 weeks) role. The pro rata'd salary is £23,902 with progression to £24,505.
What You Will Do
- Collaborate with the curriculum team, managers, and High Need leads to deliver high-quality, targeted academic, behavioural and physical support.
- Assist within lessons to provide tailored interventions for individuals or groups, assist with lesson planning/assessment, and support students in workshops, work placements, and local excursions.
- Use positive intervention strategies to manage challenging behaviours and emotional needs.
- Deliver personal, physical, and medical care as required.
- Monitor student attendance, contribute to progress reviews/target-setting, and maintain accurate student logs and documentation.
- Assist with exam preparation and invigilation across the group, and participate in open evenings or weekend events as required.
- Strictly adhere to all health and safety, safeguarding, and group legislative/regulatory policies.
- Act with honesty and integrity, utilise relational practice approaches, and participate in ongoing professional development and team meetings.
About You
- Compassionate, resilient, and highly adaptable professional dedicated to removing barriers to learning.
- Possess a natural ability to connect with young people who have diverse and complex needs, balancing a nurturing approach with firm, positive boundaries.
- Possess a deep understanding of the frustrations and challenges faced by students with complex needs; remains calm and supportive under pressure.
- Able to positively manage challenging behaviours, emotional outbursts, or high‑stress situations without taking incidents personally.
- A natural team player who can communicate seamlessly with teachers, HN leads, intervention coaches, and external support networks.
- Strongly committed to promoting student independence, dignity, and equal opportunity in every aspect of college life.
- Knowledgeable about learning difficulties, the effects of trauma on learning, and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
- Skilled in using positive behaviour interventions and de‑escalation techniques rather than punitive measures.
- Ability to break down complex curriculum concepts into accessible, digestible tasks tailored to individual EHCP targets.
- Competent (or willing to be trained) in manual handling, assisting wheelchair users, and administering basic medical or personal care plans.
- Excellent verbal and written skills for tracking student progress, updating logs, and collaborating with course teams.
