We are looking for a Weekend Production Baker to join our Bakery Team! This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a minimum of 2 years' professional baking experience who is passionate about the positive impact that baking can have, and who wants to be part of an exciting, growing business. The Luminary Bakery’s social mission means that for every sale made, we’re further on our way to empowering the UK’s most disadvantaged women. So if you’re keen to work in an environment that combines business and purpose - we’d love to hear from you.

Job Purpose: Running weekend production at our Hackney Downs production kitchen. You’ll be responsible for the weekend’s orders, from wedding and celebration cakes to large corporate orders of Letterbox Brownies and orders from our e-commerce store, and for restocking the bakery after a busy week so the team is set up for Monday. Weekends run with a smaller team, so you’ll plan your own shift from the order list and handover notes, decide how to prioritise, and keep production moving. You’ll report to the Head Baker, who sets the orders and priorities before each weekend, and you’ll hand back to the weekday team with a clear handover at the end of each shift.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Icing and decorating to a consistently high finish, including buttercream work, smooth coats, piping, lettering, and stacking and dowelling tiered cakes.
  • Restocking the bakery after the busy week: baking, portioning and storing core lines such as brownies, cookies, traybakes, sponges and pastry dough.
  • Monitoring ingredient stock, and flagging shortages to the Head Baker ahead of the week.
  • Writing a clear end-of-shift handover covering what was baked, what is outstanding, and any issues with equipment, stock or orders.
  • Supporting the Head Baker and weekday team in meeting production deadlines, and helping at the Luminary Bakery Cafe (N16) when needed.
  • Ensuring that every product that leaves the bakery is to the highest quality and standard.
  • Maintaining food hygiene and safety standards as per company policy, including allergen labelling, temperature records and cleaning schedules.
  • Leaving the kitchen clean, organised and ready for the weekday team at the end of each shift.

Requirements Necessary:

  • Have minimum 2 years of experience in a professional bakery.
  • Confident cake decorating skills, with experience finishing celebration cakes to a professional standard.
  • Comfortable working independently and using your own judgement to prioritise and solve problems when there is no manager on site.
  • Able to follow recipes, order specifications and production plans accurately.
  • Ability to bake high quality products that are uniform and consistent.
  • Motivated and hard-working, able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Organised, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work to deadlines.
  • Collaborative and hardworking.
  • Ability to handle and lift items weighing between 0-50 pounds.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Reliably available every Saturday and Sunday.

Desirable:

  • Willingness to work varied hours or days based on business needs.
  • Experience making and decorating wedding or tiered cakes.
  • Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate (or willingness to complete one).
  • Experience working alone or leading a shift in a production kitchen.
  • An interest in, or connection to, our social mission.

Perks and Incentives:

  • Free barista coffee when on shift at Stoke Newington and Kings Cross cafes.
  • 50% discount off all in house food & drink.
  • 20% discount on all online purchases.
  • FREE Birthday cake!
  • Regular opportunities for training and professional development.
  • Opportunities to be involved with national press outlets and high-profile corporate partners.
  • Work in a mission-driven social enterprise that makes a difference.
