The role
We are currently seeking a Mechanically Skilled Engineer to join our growing engineering team at our state‑of‑the‑art Peterborough site. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a background in mechanical or electrical maintenance who is eager to develop in a dynamic, high‑tech environment. Working closely with site leadership and the wider maintenance team, you'll play a vital role in ensuring the continuous operation of our automated systems, refrigeration equipment, and overall site infrastructure.
Shift Pattern Available: 4 on 4 off Nights working 18:00‑06:00

Responsibilities
- Diagnose and Resolve Equipment Failures: Quickly respond to faults across mechanical, electrical, and automated systems—including cranes, conveyors, refrigeration, and plant utilities—identifying root causes and implementing sustainable fixes.
- Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM): Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks in line with PPM programs to reduce downtime and extend equipment life. Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
- Monitor and Maintain Coldstore Systems: Regularly inspect and ensure the Coldstore plant is operating within temperature thresholds. Support the refrigeration servicing schedules and report any deviations or concerns to leadership promptly.
- Support Automation and Yard Operations: Act as a first point of contact for automation or yard system issues. Provide rapid support to restore operations and liaise with controls/automation engineers where necessary.
- Documentation and Reporting: Accurately complete maintenance logs, job sheets, and WMS entries to ensure full traceability and compliance with regulatory standards and internal procedures.
- Maintain Tools and Workspaces: Ensure all maintenance tools are kept in good working condition, compliant with PAT requirements, and that the workshop remains clean, safe, and organized.
- Parts and Stock Management: Collaborate with the Maintenance Manager to maintain stock levels of critical spare parts and consumables, helping to avoid delays in reactive or planned maintenance.
- Safety and Compliance: Adhere strictly to company health and safety protocols, food safety standards (including HACCP), and environmental policies. Promptly report unsafe situations, near‑misses, or incidents using the correct procedures.
- Contribute to Continuous Improvement: Bring forward ideas for improving equipment reliability, maintenance practices, and operational efficiency. Support project work and site upgrades as needed.
Who we're looking for
Someone with:
- A recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering. Electrical Engineering beneficial but not essential (NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, ONC/HNC or equivalent)
- Proven hands‑on experience in a maintenance role, ideally within a fast‑paced automated or logistics environment
- Strong fault‑finding and problem‑solving skills across mechanical and electrical systems
- Familiarity with food safety standards, health & safety legislation, and maintenance best practices
- Effective communicator in English with a proactive and adaptable approach
- Willing to work rotating shifts within a 24/7 operational schedule
