The Industrial Waste Operative is responsible for supporting waste management, housekeeping, and environmental compliance activities within the Plating Shop. Working closely with the Laboratory and Plating teams, the role ensures waste is collected, handled, and disposed of safely, while maintaining high housekeeping and operational standards.
This position also supports the upkeep of plating equipment, treatment systems, and surrounding work areas to ensure a safe, efficient, and compliant working environment.
Working Hours: Monday to Friday 0700-1500 (With some flexibility)
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Safely package, label, and transport hazardous and non-hazardous waste to designated storage areas.
- Prepare waste for scheduled collections and assist external waste contractors with loading.
- Remove waste bags and other waste materials from production areas as required.
- Maintain the Plating Shop, pits, Effluent Treatment Plant, and surrounding areas to 5S housekeeping standards.
- Clean plating tanks, tank lips, bus bars, and associated equipment to prevent residue build-up and maintain product quality.
- Top up process tanks as instructed by Company Chemists.
- Test high-level alarms on plating shop equipment where fitted.
- Carry out basic mechanical tasks (e.g. removal of access panels) to support waste management systems.
- Operate jet-wash equipment during weekly servicing of plating shop systems.
- Inspect and clean grit blast / shot peen areas to prevent dust accumulation.
- Complete all required documentation accurately and on time.
- Support wider company waste collection activities when needed.
- Provide support to Production within the Plating Shop, subject to training and competency.
- Train or mentor other employees where appropriate, based on qualifications and experience.
- Work safely at all times in accordance with company Health & Safety and Environmental procedures.
Experience and Knowledge:
- Desirable for the applicant to have previously held forklift and/or cherry-picker license.
- Good knowledge, awareness and understanding of use of PPE in industrial setting.
- Prior experience in handling hazardous waste is desirable.
- Desirable for the applicant to have worked within the Aviation environment.
- COMAH awareness is considered beneficial.
Education and Qualifications:
- Educated to at least GCSE level or equivalent.
- Ability to communicate fluently in written and spoken English.
