We are currently recruiting suitably qualified, competent and experienced Civil Engineering Site Agents to work across various sectors of Civil Engineering, particularly in the Water and Energy Sectors. With contract works throughout North West England and North Wales, this presents an opportunity to join one of the UK’s leading multi-discipline Civil Engineering and Building Contractors in our Northern England division. Job Purpose

To lead the safe, efficient, and successful delivery of civil engineering projects on site. The Site Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing labour, plant, subcontractors, and materials to ensure works are delivered on time, within budget, to specification, and in line with company standards. The role requires strong leadership of site teams, close engagement with clients and stakeholders, and compliance with health, safety, quality, and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Direct the necessary labour, plant, staff, and equipment to achieve completion on time, to specification, and within budget.
  • Manage contract programmes to ensure projects are delivered within timescales.
  • Ensure site supervisors are fully briefed on project requirements and priorities.
  • Monitor and control costs to ensure alignment with budgets and financial targets.
  • Carry out regular site visits to ensure the Company Health, Safety, and Environmental Plan is effectively implemented.
  • Represent the company at post-tender, pre-start, progress, and final account meetings with clients and stakeholders.
  • Manage procurement of materials and plant in line with company processes.
  • Provide quality control of works, ensuring compliance with drawings and specifications.
  • Support and coordinate site engineers and supervisors, ensuring accuracy of setting out and records.
  • Attend and contribute to internal company meetings (handover meetings, cost meetings, planning sessions).
  • Provide market intelligence and risk updates to the business (e.g., lead times, material prices, subcontractor capacity).
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and internal teams.
  • Mentor and support junior staff, apprentices, and engineers, promoting succession planning and long-term workforce development.

Health & Safety Responsibilities

  • Lead by example in maintaining a positive safety culture on site.
  • Organise site operations to minimise risks to people, plant, and materials.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant H&S legislation, CDM regulations, and company H&S management system.
  • Maintain all registers, records, and reports as required.
  • Confirm that plant and machinery operators are trained, competent, and authorised.
  • Provide clear instructions and safe systems of work to personnel, ensuring no unnecessary risks are taken.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or Construction Management (or equivalent).
  • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme).

Experience

  • Proven experience as a Site Agent in civil engineering projects.
  • Demonstrable record of delivering projects safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Experience managing subcontractors, direct workforce, and suppliers.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of civil engineering methods, sequencing, and construction processes.
  • Good commercial awareness and ability to control costs.
  • Strong planning, organisational, and leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • IT literacy (MS Office, project planning software).
