We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Functional Skills Maths Teacher to deliver engaging and accessible maths lessons within a prison education setting. In this rewarding role, you will support learners to improve their numeracy skills, overcome barriers to learning and progress towards positive outcomes.

We have a fantastic opportunity available to join Novus, our prison education provider at HMP Hewell, working as a Functional Skills Maths Teacher on a permanent, part-time basis (12 hours per week). Working pattern includes Thursday from 8am-5pm and Friday from 8am-12pm.

Site Information: Situated in the village of Tardebigge, near Redditch in Worcestershire, England, HMP Hewell is a Category B men’s prison serving the West Midlands area. It offers a range of training and development programs, including vocational workshops, educational courses, and initiatives focused on resettlement and family support.

Role Responsibilities: In this role, you will deliver engaging, accessible and high-quality Functional Skills Maths lessons which support learners to develop confidence with numeracy, problem-solving and practical maths skills for everyday life, further learning and future employment. You will play a key part in helping learners overcome barriers to maths, build independence and achieve recognised qualifications within a prison education setting. You will:

  • Plan and deliver high-quality Functional Skills Maths teaching sessions which are accessible, engaging and tailored to learners’ numeracy needs and abilities.
  • Support learners to develop practical maths skills, including number, measure, shape, data handling and problem-solving, with a focus on real-life and workplace contexts.
  • Assess learner progress, provide constructive feedback and maintain accurate records in line with quality requirements.
  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that motivates learners and supports achievement.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to promote progression, employability and positive learner outcomes.
  • Use initial assessment and ongoing feedback to identify learners’ strengths, address barriers to learning and support individual progress.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience: To be successful in this role, you will need to:

  • Hold a teaching qualification and a relevant subject specialist qualification - or commit to obtain one outstanding qualification within 12 months.
  • Hold a recognised maths subject specialist qualification (Desirable).
  • Bring a strong understanding of Functional Skills Maths teaching approaches, with the ability to adapt learning to support learners at different levels of confidence, ability and prior educational experience.
  • Hold a minimum of Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy.
  • Understand or have experience creating stimulating, vibrant environments which are conducive to learning and motivational for learners.
  • Have a good previous track record of achieving quality targets and positive team working.
  • Engage with and produce accurate and timely reports when required.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Have an ability to motivate and enthuse learners in the subject matter.
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills to prioritise workload and meet deadlines/targets.
