About the Role

The Wheelchair Performance Pathway plays a critical role in this mission, and we are seeking a high impact, experienced, and highly credible National Coach to ensure Great Britain remains one of the most respected nations in the world for player development. This includes delivering a world-leading Elite, Pro Scholarship Programme (PSP), Pro Transition Programme (PTP), Wheelchair Access and National Age Group Programme (NAGP) to support and develop wheelchair tennis players to progress from the early stages of performance competition through to an elite international level, with the ultimate ambition being for British players to win Grand Slam titles, Paralympic medals and World Team Cup titles.

The National Coach will case manage any identified Wheelchair Performance Pathway programme players and within that will have direct responsibility for overseeing and quality assuring the technical, tactical and performer development content of supported player programmes within an interdisciplinary environment. The role requires support as a player’s case manager during daily training activities at the NTC in Roehampton or any other player’s home base, working on and off court with the player and their lead coach and support team. It also requires organising training, preparation camps, and tournament support during targeted competitions like Grand Slams and other ITF Wheelchair tournaments and within specific medal focused events such as the World Team Cup and Paralympic Games.

Key Accountabilities

  • Driving Forward Individual Player Performance
  • Case-managing any identified Wheelchair Performance Pathway programme players (Elite, PSP, PTP, Wheelchair Access, or NAGP under 18/14 players).
  • Ensure that optimal daily training programmes and performance support services are in place for each of the identified programme players (either NTC or home based).
  • Liaise frequently with each player, their lead coach and their performance support team over the implementation, delivery and progress of their daily training programme and collectively take forward activities to accelerate progress towards agreed targets and outcomes.
  • Lead on the design, implementation, monitoring, assessment, and feedback of Individual Development Plans (IDPs) for each player to achieve international success.
  • Work with the wheelchair performance programme staff supporting the player’s individual performance to identify priorities in line with the IDP.
  • Advise on the planning and support of each player’s tournament schedule as part of their IDP.
  • Undertake regular visits to each player and their coaching and support team within their daily training programme, with an emphasis on supporting development in line with their IDP.
  • Plan a cycle of regular player review meetings that tracks progress and identifies priorities in line with their IDP and annual programme.
  • Player profiling, monitoring, and selection
    • Contribute to the design and development of the performance tracking and management tools within the Wheelchair Performance Programme together with other programme staff.
    • Work alongside the Wheelchair Performance Analyst to determine the key factors in player development, improvement, and performance to produce regular feedback to individual coaches and programme staff.
    • Complete consistent match scouting through tournament attendance and streamed channels.
  • Lead, Manage and Deliver Daily Training, Training Camps, and Tournament Support
    • Plan, manage, support, and deliver training sessions during daily training activities at the NTC for any identified players in coordination with the player’s lead coach.
    • Organise training and preparation camps with the other National coaches for any identified player groups to prepare for targeted competitions like Grand Slams and other ITF Wheelchair tournaments and within specific medal focused events such as World Team Cup and Paralympic Games.
    • Assist and advise in the coordination of the logistics of daily training activities at the NTC, training and preparation camps and tournament travel.
    • Provide tournament and coaching support to any identified player or player groups at selected Wheelchair Tennis Tour events, both international and domestic, with regular feedback to the players personal teams post-competition.
    • Act as a team member and coach or captain at significant competitions including World Team Cups, Grand Slams, and the Paralympic Games.
    • Work alongside the Wheelchair medical team to ensure positive player wellbeing.
  • Supporting the Wheelchair Performance Pathway
    • Work alongside the Head of Wheelchair Performance Pathway to further develop the player selection processes, player agreements and player funding, and work with the other National coaches to ensure effective transition of players between pathway levels.
    • Provide support, education, and personal development to the designated coaches active in the Wheelchair Performance Pathway.
    • In conjunction with the Head of Wheelchair Performance Pathway, support the development, refinement and application of the wheelchair tennis ‘what it takes to win’ framework.
    • Support the development of classification processes throughout the Wheelchair Player Pathway.
    • Work with the LTA coach education team to support the development of coach education within wheelchair tennis.
    • Work with the Talent Pathway Manager to support talent identification, confirmation, and development initiatives.
    • Take oversight of any Division, age group, gender, or any other strategic theme that makes up the player pathway, and as agreed with the Head of Wheelchair Performance Pathway.
  • General
    • Bring forward initiatives and recommendations that further enhance performance to the Head of Wheelchair Performance Pathway.
    • Contribute to the development of an optimal culture and environment for players and staff involved in Wheelchair Tennis that evokes trust and confidence from stakeholders.
    • Undertake personal CPD, both formal and informal, as appropriate to meet the demands of the role and continue to challenge and enhance the work of the wheelchair tennis coaching team.
