I am supporting a growing resilience and crisis response practice that is looking to make a senior hire within Crisis and Event Response.

This is a genuine build role.

When an organisation is disrupted, two pieces of work run side by side: the visible work of fixing what broke, and the equally important work of keeping the organisation running while that happens.

Most firms have invested well in the first.

This role is about building the capability that covers both, and doing it properly.

The role

  • Assess where an organisation's response would come under strain, and present that clearly enough for an executive committee to act on.

Specific, named findings rather than maturity scores.

  • Build the structures that help people decide well under pressure: delegated authority that works in practice, roles that have been rehearsed rather than assigned on the day, and coordination that holds up when the room is busy.
  • Bring the difficult decisions forward, so they are resolved calmly and in advance rather than in the middle of a live event.
  • Design and run exercises that test the specialist teams and third party partners, not only the leadership tier.

Most organisations have rehearsed their leadership well, and this is the natural next step for them.

  • Keep situational awareness clear in a live room, helping everyone separate what is known from what is believed from what is professional judgement.
  • Establish how the organisation continues planning ahead while it is still responding, holding current operations and recovery as parallel workstreams.
  • Agree in advance the conditions under which a response stands down, so it concludes by design and the team finishes in good shape.
  • Turn what happened into embedded change, and then check it has taken hold. A lessons log on its own does not change much.

Success looks like this: the organisation can run a serious event confidently without you in the room.

  • The ideal candidate will have
  • Direct experience inside a live event while it was still running, on the response side and with real responsibility.
  • Designed and facilitated exercises personally, for people more senior than themselves, including exercises that moved away from the script.
  • The presence to lead a room they do not outrank, and the judgement to give a chief executive an honest view at the moment it matters most.
  • A well developed understanding of why capable, senior people escalate rather than decide, and what conditions actually change that.
  • Sound judgement in live events, making good calls when the information is incomplete, contradictory and moving quickly.
  • Command structure literacy, including a clear view of what a tiered response is for and how to keep the tiers working as intended.
  • Strong executive communication in compressed form, verbal and written. A situation summarised in ninety seconds that lands on a decision, and a page a board can act on.
  • Diagnostic listening, picking up what an organisation's own account of itself says about where its response would benefit from strengthening.
  • A constructive writing style that describes findings as organisational conditions rather than individual faults, in language an organisation will engage with.
  • What would strengthen an application
  • Technology recovery fluency, enough to hold a credible conversation with a CIO or infrastructure lead about sequencing and dependencies without needing to be the engineer.
  • Third party and supply chain response experience.
  • Regulatory literacy in the FCA and PRA operational resilience regime, or the appetite and ability to pick it up quickly.
  • Crisis communications competence as one component of a broader response skill set.
  • Coaching and debriefing skill, running debriefs that produce open, honest reflection.
  • Parallel planning experience during a live event.

Strong candidates come from a range of backgrounds: military or emergency services staff roles where current operations and future operations are held separately, major incident command, live technology recovery leadership, and operational leadership inside a regulated firm that has been through a significant event.

Consulting backgrounds are very welcome, especially when the person was in the room during a live event rather than only reviewing afterwards.
