About the role

We are seeking an exceptional Embedded Systems & Electronics Design Engineer to drive the development of next-generation microwave-based sensing platforms for healthcare applications. This role sits at the intersection of advanced circuit design, embedded systems, and intelligent data-driven technologies, supporting the creation of handheld and wearable diagnostic devices. You will lead the design and integration of microwave generation and sensing circuitry, digital electronics, microcontrollers, and wireless communication (e.g., Bluetooth) to enable real-time detection, monitoring, and prevention of infectious diseases. Working in a highly multidisciplinary environment, you will contribute across the full technology lifecycle from concept and prototyping through to validation, regulatory readiness, and real-world deployment. This is a rare opportunity to shape cutting-edge sensor technologies with tangible global health impact.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and prototype advanced electronic circuitry for handheld and wearable sensor devices targeting early detection, monitoring and prevention of health conditions.
  • Develop and integrate low-noise analogue, digital, and mixed-signal circuit architectures, including microwave and RF components, for precision sensing applications.
  • Conduct iterative testing and refinement of sensor designs to optimise performance and usability.
  • Collaborate with data scientists to interface hardware with AI and ML algorithms.
  • Design embedded systems and firmware for real-time data acquisition and wireless communication.
  • Develop and implement rigorous testing and validation protocols to assess the reliability, accuracy, and stability of electronic circuits and integrated systems.
  • Design and prototype circuitry in alignment with environmental and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing to ensure robust operation under varied physiological and clinical conditions.
  • Ensure adherence to international standards and regulatory frameworks relevant to electronic or medical devices.
  • Work closely with academic, industry, and clinical partners to align objectives and address user needs.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact academic journals and present at international conferences.
  • Contribute to translating research findings into practical applications by supporting collaborations with industry partners.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate

  • PhD or equivalent industrial experience in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline with a focus on electronic circuit design or sensor technologies.
  • Proven expertise in designing and prototyping of electronic circuits for handheld or wearable sensor devices.
  • Proficiency in analogue, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design, including experience with microwave and RF components for sensing and communications.
  • Experience in conducting experimental validation and iterative development of technological solutions.
  • Experience using electronic design automation (EDA) tools namely Eagle and laboratory instrumentation for circuit testing and characterisation.
  • Strong track record of publishing research in peer-reviewed journals or writing industrial reports.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present findings clearly to diverse audiences.

Additional benefits

  • Generous occupational pension schemes.
  • Government backed “cycle to work” scheme.
  • Affiliated, discounted staff membership to the University of Liverpool Sports Centre.
  • A range of additional family friendly policies.
