The Parish Lab at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine focuses on antimicrobial drug discovery, with an emphasis on tuberculosis. We are recruiting a Technical Project Manager to ensure the smooth running of the lab, support new assay development, manage laboratory infrastructure, and maintain high standards of safety and data integrity. You will mentor and train staff, oversee daily operations, manage internal reporting, and provide technical expertise, helping to deliver high-quality research aimed at developing new treatments for tuberculosis.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Laboratory Operations and Safety
    • Manage day-to-day operations of the Parish Lab, ensuring smooth workflow and resource availability.
    • Provide basic laboratory and safety training to staff; maintain safety documentation and training records.
    • Maintain laboratory inventories, media preparation, and supply chains.
    • Maintain the compound repository and track compound usage and storage.
    • Ensure all equipment is in full working order; coordinate preventative maintenance, repairs, and equipment replacement costing.
    • Ensure compliance with institutional regulations and maintain relevant permits and protocols.
    • Work with the chemistry teams to support laboratory operations, scheduling, and infrastructure.
    • Maintain robotics and automated liquid handling platforms in good working order.
    • Engineer or guide development of custom instruments or software components when required.
    • Train staff to work safely at Containment Level 3 (CL3) and ensure compliance with CL3 requirements.
  • Mentoring and training
    • Supervise and mentor research associates executing microbiological and cell-based assays.
    • Train staff in microbiology, use of scientific equipment, laboratory documentation, and good research practices.
    • Oversee completion and quality of laboratory notebooks and adherence to SOPs.
    • Run weekly lab meetings and coordinate communication across the team.
  • Data analysis and communication
    • Manage and maintain the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for compound and assay data.
    • Oversee quality control checks, data review, and documentation.
    • Compile, analyse, and interpret experimental datasets.
    • Assist with writing research reports, publications, and presentations.

We are looking for:

  • PhD in biological science with substantial laboratory experience
  • Experience supervising and training laboratory personnel
  • Knowledge of microbiology or cell biology, laboratory safety, and good research practices
  • Experience with LIMS or compound management systems, equipment maintenance, and procurement
  • Strong organisational, time-management, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Experience preparing scientific reports or publications
  • Experience working within Containment Level 3 (CL3) laboratories.
