We are working on behalf of a highly respected specialist law firm to recruit a Paralegal for its Court of Protection team. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with a genuine interest in human rights and the protection of vulnerable adults to join a well-established and supportive practice.

The team advises and represents vulnerable adults who may lack capacity to make decisions, primarily in relation to health and welfare matters. Cases are often complex, sensitive and, at times, high profile. The work frequently involves acting via litigation friends such as the Official Solicitor, advocates or Relevant Person’s Representatives, as well as representing family members, carers and others with a legitimate interest in a vulnerable adult’s welfare.

The Role

This is a fast-paced and varied position, supporting fee earners with all aspects of Court of Protection casework. Responsibilities will include:

  • Drafting Legal Aid applications, court orders and witness statements
  • Undertaking legal research
  • Managing and processing evidence
  • Preparing court bundles
  • Collating documentation
  • Attending on clients
  • Participating in case conferences and court hearings
  • Handling new enquiries
  • Supporting the team with general case administration

Ongoing training and close supervision will be provided by senior members of the team.

Skills and Experience

Applicants should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal abilities and a genuine capacity to work empathetically with vulnerable clients. You will need to be well organised, proactive and able to manage competing priorities effectively in a demanding environment.

Previous experience in Court of Protection work is strongly preferred and will be a key factor in the selection process. Experience of health and welfare matters, Legal Aid work and drafting court documentation is particularly valuable. While completion of the LPC, BVC or SQE and prior paralegal experience are not essential, they are considered advantageous. Strong IT skills are required.

This role would suit someone seeking to develop a long-term career within Court of Protection law in a specialist and highly regarded team.
