We are working with a well-established, regional law firm to recruit an experienced Department Assistant to support its highly regarded Family team. This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive and organised Legal Secretary / Department Assistant to join a professional, client-focused practice with a strong reputation in the market.

The Department Assistant plays a key role within the Family department, providing comprehensive administrative and secretarial support to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the team. The successful candidate will work closely with fee earners, colleagues across the department and the wider Business Support Team, contributing to the delivery of a high-quality client service.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing accurate legal correspondence and documentation through audio and copy typing
  • Supporting clients in person, by telephone and email, delivering a professional and empathetic service in line with the firm’s client care standards
  • Diary management, appointment coordination and general departmental administration
  • Liaising with the Business Support Team on photocopying, post distribution, file opening and file closure in compliance with Law Society and SRA requirements
  • Preparing meeting rooms and refreshments when required
  • Providing guidance and support to other Department Assistants within Family and across the firm
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality of client and firm information
  • Undertaking training and taking responsibility for ongoing professional development
  • Assisting with ad hoc duties as required by Partners

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience as a Legal Secretary or Department Assistant within a law firm
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Confident written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritise effectively and work under pressure
  • A professional, discreet and team-oriented approach
