The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner shall provide a full range of outcome-based nurse practitioner services in accordance with privileges granted by the MTF, including:

  • Supervising and providing general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine, acute and chronic conditions involving any and all organ systems.
  • Providing immunizations.
  • Diagnosing, treating, and counselling patients as indicated.

Additionally, the role includes:

  • Technically directing and teaching other staff, providing evidence-based educational lectures, and participating in in-service training to staff members.
  • Diagnosing and treating patients with common acute conditions, chronic illnesses, or minor trauma within accepted protocols, clinical practice guidelines, Nurse Practice Acts, and/or in consultation with a physician.
  • Promoting preventive care and health maintenance including annual physicals, positive health behaviours, and self-care through both formal and individual education and counselling.
  • Communicating and collaborating with a diverse group of people to inform the healthcare team of plans/actions, and for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organisation.
  • Recognising conditions that require isolation and ensuring universal precautions are used in all patient encounters.
  • Attending staff meetings to provide case discussion, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement and safety.

Qualifications: The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner shall possess a Master’s degree in Nursing from an academic program, within the nursing specialty field of study that is accredited by a regional or national nursing accrediting agency recognised by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

The contractor shall be certified as a Psychiatric-Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or the recognised national nursing certification organisation for the specialty area of practice as appropriate.

Experience: The contractor shall have the minimum experience required to meet clinical competency requirements specified in the Service-specific credentialing instructions. The contractor shall maintain credentialing requirements in good standing at a local MTF.

Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse in one of any U.S. State, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico or U.S. Virgin Islands. All HCPs shall have and maintain current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) as certified by the American Heart Association. Documentation of such training shall be provided to the COR.
